IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO 2025 LADBROKES COX PLATE DAY. Today marks a truly historic occasion as we stage the final meeting on the current track. It is a defining moment in the Club’s proud history as we look ahead to The Valley of Tomorrow. The atmosphere promises to be electric as we witness the 105th running of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Australia’s Best Race carries a record $6 million in prizemoney this year, with $4 million to the winner. There are captivating storylines everywhere you look, including Via Sistina, who is aiming to go back-to-back and would provide James McDonald with a fourth consecutive victory in the race. It is a superb day of racing with nine black-type races along with the inaugural Strathmore Community Bendigo Bank Imperatriz Sprint. Among the highlights is the Group 2 Cirka McEwen Stakes, with the winner earning a golden ticket into Southside Racing’s Meteorite as the Club’s slot representative. Adding to the prestige, it is fantastic to have World Pool covering the entire program, showcasing The Valley to a global audience. An iconic tradition of Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day is the singing of The Horses, and it is a pleasure to welcome Daryl Braithwaite back to continue this special moment. Following the final race, the entertainment continues on track with a concert featuring the Australian Rock Collective. Members of Spiderbait, Jet, Powderfinger, and You Am I will bring the Carnival to a fitting close. I encourage everyone to purchase a Cox Plate Charity Pin on course today for $10, with proceeds supporting our Charity Partner, Myeloma Australia. Their work supporting people living with myeloma, their families, and raising awareness of this blood cancer is truly outstanding. On behalf of the Club, I extend my sincere thanks to our Principal Partner, Ladbrokes, and to all our Carnival sponsors and partners who make this event possible. Finally, to our loyal members, thank you for your continued support as we embark on this exciting new era. Enjoy a memorable Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming transferred meetings. CHAIR ADAM LENNEN CHAIR’S WELCOME Moonee Valley Racing Club respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to its Elders past, present and emerging.

“There’s a third Cox Plate up in smoke.” That’s what went through the mind of James McDonald four days out from last year’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Thankfully, 96 hours is a long time in racing, and for James McDonald, he went from thinking he wouldn’t have a shot at winning a third straight Ladbrokes Cox Plate, to dominating ‘Australia’s Best Race’. “I said to Katelyn (partner) – I am stuffed, I won’t be having a Cox Plate ride this year,” after Via Sistina dumped him at Tuesday’s Breakfast with the Best. “It was traumatic laying on the track watching her galloping off.” While the Ladbrokes Cox Plate has delivered a golden run for McDonald the past three years, the Kiwi isn’t immune to its cruel twists and turns. Dundeel had let him down in the race as favourite in 2013, while Criterion finished midfield as second favourite a year later. Hartnell had come off second best to Winx in a match race that ended up more like a trouncing, while even Verry Elleegant proved she could have an off day in 2019. Then there was Zaaki, withdrawn on race morning as a red-hot favourite two years later. So, by the time Anamoe’s turn had come in 2022, McDonald had a full appreciation of how hard the race could be to win.

“It was a very special day, and to win a first-ever Cox Plate is a jockey’s dream,” he recalls. “It was great memories that float back from your childhood and what you want to achieve as a jockey, and do you ever think you’ll get there, no, but we’ve been blessed. “You grow up idolising that race - the greats like Sunline, Saintly and Makybe Diva, but it takes such a special horse to win it.” Such his appreciation for Anamoe, McDonald knew he would need a special horse to win a second Ladbrokes Cox Plate, and he just happened to know of one in Hong Kong. While he admits it took some persuasion on his part, he knew Romantic Warrior was the horse who could deliver in 2023. “I just thought he had balance, he was strong, gate speed, sustained speed, turn of foot and a will to win – everything to win a Cox Plate,” “It’s so unique the track, the pressure is on, and you need the perfect racehorse. “It’s the clash of the titans… all the good horses are there.” While McDonald thought he had been beaten that year by Mr Brightside, the Hong Kong star had still won despite racing below his best he believes. The same can’t be said for the following year when Via Sistina went to a whole new level, winning by eight lengths in track record time. “It was something very special,” McDonald said of the victory in 2024. “I have been blessed to have three Horse of the Year’s take out the Cox Plate. “To do it on three different horses is even a bit more special – it’s been unique each one and I am very proud.” So, is the 33-year-old dreaming of a four-peat? “It would be something awesome to achieve,” he says of a fourth-straight Ladbrokes Cox Plate win. “But whether it's third, second, fourth, just to try and win the race, it’s a great race to be a part of. “I love the Moonee Valley racecourse, and now it holds such a special place for me.” A fourth successive W.S. Cox Plate win would see James McDonald join only Hugh Bowman with four straight wins in the race. Bowman sits alongside Brent Thomson, Jack Purtevll and Glen Boss with four victories in the race, placing them behind only Darby Munro with five wins.

THE WORLD POOL RED ANCHOR STAKES IS A GROUP 3 SET WEIGHTS PLUS PENALTIES RACE OVER 1200 METRES FOR THREEYEAR-OLD HORSES. Red Anchor was a New Zealand-bred horse who was awarded the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1985. Trained by legendary trainer T J Smith, Red Anchor won three Group 1 races in the Spring of 1984, highlighted by the 1984 W.S. Cox Plate. Dominant as a three-year-old, Red Anchor was once described by T J Smith as the “new Tulloch,” but, unfortunately, he got injured the following year and never raced again. Just how good Red Anchor could have been, we will never know – but today we recognise and celebrate his outstanding career with the running of the Group 3 World Pool Red Anchor Stakes. The Red Anchor Stakes has been run since 1985 and continues to be one of the many highlights on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day each year. RED ANCHOR STAKES
