THE WORLD POOL RED ANCHOR STAKES IS A GROUP 3 SET WEIGHTS PLUS PENALTIES RACE OVER 1200 METRES FOR THREEYEAR-OLD HORSES. Red Anchor was a New Zealand-bred horse who was awarded the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1985. Trained by legendary trainer T J Smith, Red Anchor won three Group 1 races in the Spring of 1984, highlighted by the 1984 W.S. Cox Plate. Dominant as a three-year-old, Red Anchor was once described by T J Smith as the “new Tulloch,” but, unfortunately, he got injured the following year and never raced again. Just how good Red Anchor could have been, we will never know – but today we recognise and celebrate his outstanding career with the running of the Group 3 World Pool Red Anchor Stakes. The Red Anchor Stakes has been run since 1985 and continues to be one of the many highlights on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day each year. RED ANCHOR STAKES
