FLEMINGTON SATURDAY 25 APRIL ANZAC DAY RACE DAY
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. LEST WE FORGET
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY Anzac Day 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of the Victoria Racing Club’s inaugural Anzac Day race meeting, held on 25 April 1961. It has been a regular, though not quite continuous, part of Flemington’s long history. Anzac Day is our national day of remembrance commemorating Australians and New Zealanders who served, and those who died, in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The date 25 April was the day of the first landing of Anzac troops at Gallipoli in the First World War in 1915. Racing played a part – and in the case of the VRC and the former Australian Jockey Club in Sydney, a huge part – in supporting patriotic fundraising in both the First and the Second World War. Australia, as a Federation, has never quite determined how best to mark Anzac Day. Each State and Territory has its own laws. The idea of a By Dr Andrew Lemon 65 YEARS ANZAC DAY & FLEMINGTON STRONG
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY national Anzac Day holiday goes back to 1920, with the understanding that it would be “solemnly observed” – specifically meaning no horse racing. In 1925, Victoria passed its first Anzac Day Observance Act, closing shops, theatres, and hotels on 25 April and forbidding racing and sports gatherings. This legislation stayed in force well beyond the Second World War. Other states slowly eased restrictions. In 1937, Adelaide inaugurated Anzac Day races at Morphettville, raising funds for needy former servicemen and dependants. Sydney allowed afternoon football, but not racing until 1953. New Victorian legislation in 1960 allowed the VRC to conduct races on Anzac Day under strict conditions. A late starting time ensured no clashes with the traditional Anzac Day march through the city. Any profits were to be directed to special Anzac Day funds. The VRC planned its first Anzac Day races for 1960, but torrential rain forced the meeting’s cancellation. This is why 1961 was Flemington’s first Anzac Day race meeting. Race One was the Nurses’ Stakes, followed by the Army Handicap, Navy Handicap and Air Force Poppies scattered across the Flemington Front Lawn.
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY Steeplechase. Jockey Jack Purtell won the feature Gallipoli Handicap on Sporting Spirit. The meeting concluded with the Victory Highweight. This formula continued with minor variations for the next dozen years The VRC held its 1962 Anzac Day meeting at Caulfield. Whenever Anzac Day fell on a Sunday, there was no meeting: this did not change until 1993. In 2001 and 2007, the meeting was held at Moonee Valley when Flemington’s track was under renovation. Otherwise, the VRC has conducted Anzac Day races at Flemington continuously since 1961. The program has evolved. In 1972, the venerable classic for three-yearolds, the VRC St Leger, switched from the Autumn Carnival to become the Anzac Day feature. In its new spot, it was won by such good horses as Taras Bulba, Lord Dudley, So Called and Gurner’s Lane. Many individual heroes, battles and places of wartime significance have since been commemorated. Race names have honoured, among others, British nurse Edith Cavell, General Sir John Monash, Lone Pine, the Somme, Villers-Brettoneux and Beersheba in the First World War; Nancy Wake, Kokoda, Shaggy Ridge, Changi and Hellfire Pass, the Normandy landings, the naval battles of Matapan and the Coral Sea, and the City of Darwin Squadron in the Second World War; Long Tan and Coral-Balmoral in Vietnam. 5 ANZAC DAY RACE DAY The Air Force Steeple became the William Newton Steeplechase in 1988, and the name continues with the Newton Handicap. Flight Lieutenant William Newton of 22 Squadron RAAF, an accomplished sportsman, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery, repeatedly diving through intense anti-aircraft fire to bomb enemy positions on the north coast of New Guinea. When shot down on 18 March 1943, aged 23, he was captured and ceremonially beheaded. He was one of 20 Australians awarded the VC in the Second World War. Much has been written of the role of the brave Australian war horses, including thoroughbreds and former racehorses. They are never forgotten at Flemington on Anzac Day. Eight VRC committeemen held office as Chairman across the 57 years from 1935: seven had been officers in either the First or Second World War – or in the case of Sir Chester Manifold, in both. The exception, Richard Turnbull, lost both of his sons on active service. Hilton Nicholas, Sir Rupert Steele and Peter Armytage all flew with the RAF, as did Armytage’s Vice Chairman, Ian Bayles who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. General Sir Thomas Blamey was on the VRC Committee from 1947 until his death in 1951. Behind the scenes at Flemington, and rarely told, are many other stories of war service. Racing continued at this racecourse during both the First and Second World Wars, but there were officials, staff, trainers, jockeys, stablehands and their families who enlisted and served. One of the highlights of modern VRC Anzac Day race meeting is an official commemoration centred on the Mounting Yard. To this, everyone brings their own memories. It’s racing’s way of saying, “Lest we forget”.
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY At Watsonia RSL, community is more than a word – it’s the heart of everything they do. From assisting veterans with housing and health support to connecting servicemen and women with a sense of belonging, the Sub-Branch plays a quiet but powerful role. This Anzac Day, their work will again be in the spotlight thanks to a continuing partnership with the Victoria Racing Club, which generously supports Watsonia RSL’s fundraising for the Anzac Appeal. “The VRC has given us an amazing opportunity,” says Anna Dalakis, Veteran and Community Support/Appeals Coordinator at Watsonia RSL. “They’ve always been so supportive. We’re able to sell badges and pins on course on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, and we often send a group of volunteers who get to enjoy a day at Flemington in return.” By Celia Purdey THE AND THE POWER OF COMMUNITY ANZAC APPEAL
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY It’s a day of service with a unique reward – the atmosphere of Flemington and the gratitude of a community. And it pays off. “We usually raise between $10,000 and $15,000, which goes directly to the Anzac Appeal, which is a veterans support fund that helps deliver real outcomes for real people,” Dalakis says. CONNECTING VETERANS THROUGH SHARED EXPERIENCES One of the most tangible outcomes is RSL Active, a program that brings veterans and their families together through social and recreational activities. “Many veterans move every two or three-years during service, so when they leave, they often don’t have a strong local network,” Dalakis explains. Activities range from go-karting and indoor archery to iFly and Urban Surf sessions – all designed to foster wellbeing and inclusion, often with partners or children involved. “We also offer a meal at the RSL, and people connect there, as well. It’s the beginning of creating a community,” Dalakis says.
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY HONOURING THE MISSING Watsonia RSL also supports the remarkable work of Fallen Diggers Incorporated, a volunteer group dedicated to locating and identifying the 30,000 Australian military personnel from the First and Second World Wars who still have no known grave. “These volunteers do everything from archival research to archaeological digs, working with state and federal governments,” Dalakis explains. “We’ve helped fund trips to France and Gallipoli, or contributed to excavation costs – whatever helps give families closure.” She recalls the poignant story of a veteran who spent many years searching for his brother, missing in war. “They finally found his remains, and were able to notify the family. The surviving brother passed away just weeks later, but he finally had the answer he’d waited for.”
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY REAL SUPPORT FOR REAL PEOPLE Closer to home, Watsonia RSL is deeply engaged in veteran and family wellbeing, supporting those who may be facing challenges like unemployment, mental health issues or homelessness. Through links with organisations like Open Arms and Vasey RSL Care, they act as connectors – helping veterans navigate systems, secure housing or simply access a local GP for the first time. “A lot of people come to us having never had to organise things for themselves – in service, so much is done for you,” Dalakis explains. “We help them find the tools they need to transition.” From advocacy with DVA to short-term accommodation through The V Centre, the goal is stability and dignity. Volunteers – including students studying wellbeing or counselling – provide a supportive presence, while local connections lead to work opportunities with businesses like Eastlink. There’s also practical community support – from mowing lawns and checking on groceries for older veterans, to sponsoring local sports clubs with service members in their ranks. “It’s about helping people feel like they’re still part of something, still valued,” Dalakis says. LEST WE FORGET As we near April 25, Dalakis reflects on what Anzac Day means beyond the parades and ceremonies. “During peacetime, awareness can slip away. But it’s always important. Anzac Day is a time to reflect not just on what’s been done in the past, but what is still being done every day – by our veterans, by their families, and by the communities who support them.” At Flemington and beyond, the badge sellers, volunteers and quiet workers at places like Watsonia RSL remind us that remembrance is not just about history – it’s about how we honour that history in our actions today. 10 ANZAC DAY RACE DAY The Australian Waler horse breed had a significant role in the First World War, and historian Andrew Lemon enlightens us as to exactly what that was. It has been said that the horses known as Australian Walers are unsung heroes of the First World War. If that was ever true, it is not true now. In 2001, singer-songwriter Eric Bogle (the man who gave us “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”) wrote a moving tribute to the horses who served and to the men who loved them and had to leave them behind, “As If He Knows”. 11 ANZAC DAY RACE DAY In reality the Australian war horse has been long celebrated and his sacrifices mourned in sculpture, poetry, newspaper articles, history books and memorials. In telling of the courage and endurance of the Walers, war correspondent Sir Henry (Harry) Gullett captured the imagination of Australians. His widely-read articles at the end of the war told of ‘thoroughbred triumphs’ and of the affection of the Light Horsemen towards their mounts. Charles Chauvel’s 1940 movie Forty Thousand Horsemen retold the story of the Australian cavalry charge in the 1917 Battle of Beersheba and was one of the most successful motion pictures of its time. Calling our war horses “Australian Walers” is a bit of a misnomer. Many were thoroughbreds. Not all Walers were war horses. Not all war horses were Walers. The term Waler was first applied to a variety of horses bred in New South Wales – not a distinct breed – and exported to British India in the 1840s as racehorses, work horses and military horses. The pedigrees were ambiguous. Different breeds and physical types served different purposes. Some were used by the military, others competed on the racetracks of Calcutta. The horse trade to India remained one of Australia’s significant export industries well into the twentieth century. In that tradition, “Waler” was used to describe Australian-bred horses sent to support our troops in the war, when mechanical transport was in its infancy. Another word was ‘remount’, a chilling, technical term to describe fresh horses replacing horses killed or injured in battle. Estimates of numbers exported from Australia for the war vary greatly. Some say 190,000. The Australian War Memorial estimate is 136,000. Only one returned, but it is not the case that all the rest had to be destroyed before their heart-broken soldier-riders came back to Australia. Too many tragically were, but others were sold locally to continue lives of peacetime service in the Middle East, France and England. ‘Every sort of remount has been represented,’ Harry Gullett wrote, ‘from the thoroughbred to the half draught and the Galloway. They brought us through by their swift sure hooves and their brave hearts…
ANZAC DAY RACE DAY ‘The ideal horse is the seven-eighths thoroughbred of this type, blessed with a quiet temperament.’ Gullett believed that ‘the “great horses” of the regiments … are in every case horses which might have been metropolitan hurdle racers or steeplechasers’. Other writers noted that sons and grandsons of Cups and classics winners were among the Australian Walers in Palestine and the Western Front. The thoroughbred is a large component in the ancestry of what is considered a Waler today. The Waler is now treasured as a special breed whose story is guarded by two organisations, the Waler Horse Society of Australia and the Waler Horse Owners and Breeders Association of Australia. The increasingly popular Australian Stock Horse is related to both Waler and the Thoroughbred, and also has its own stud book and association. Waler, Thoroughbred, War Horse: praised, mourned, not forgotten. Sandy was the only horse to return to Australia after the First World War, brought home at the request of Major General Sir William Throsby Bridges KCB CMG, Commander of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and the 1st Australian Division from 1914 to 1915. It had been General Bridges’ dying wish that his beloved horse be brought back to Australia to live out his remaining years in peace. (Image source: Australian War Memorial) The general declaration is that the nearer a Waler is to a thoroughbred – provided of course that this is a horse of good bone and substance and not a weed – the better he is for active service.
