HELLO AND WELCOME TO SOUTHSIDE CRANBOURNE. On behalf of the Club, I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends. We are set for a fantastic afternoon of racing and entertainment, with plenty on offer for families and younger racegoers, including a pop-up waterpark, free rides and a range of activities, along with a high-quality race card. This has been a milestone year for the Club. The 2025 Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival was a highlight, culminating in Via Sistina defending her crown with a courageous victory in the 105th running of the W.S. Cox Plate. Following the Carnival, we commenced the redevelopment of Moonee Valley Racecourse as we progress the delivery of The Valley of Tomorrow. I sincerely thank our members and partners for their continued support and for their engagement throughout an important year of transition for the Club. I look forward to keeping you informed as the redevelopment progresses. I wish you all a happy and safe New Year and I look forward to welcoming you to our transferred meetings in 2026. He added with the tempo reducing in the middle stages and the race then developing into a sprint home, this did not suit the gelding, which was unable to quicken under 59kg. Rdr said no specific inst. Added after beginning only fairly mount settled towards rear of field which was further back than intended. Added he then was held up until nearing the 300m. Rdr said he tried to move wider on straightening when held up. Added then endeavoured to shift in to improve however was disappointed for clear running and was checked before shifting wider near the 100m to secure clear running where mount ran on well. Rdr said in hindsight should have remained racing on inside. Co-Tnr concurred with views of rider. SANL 20/08/2025 Silent Shares Laid out under pressure in the straight. SANL 13/08/2025 Chergui Vetted - cardiac arrhythmia for the first time. CAUL 29/11/2025 Torotena Near the 700m was inconvenienced when tightened for room.BRAT 06/12/2025 Col Klink Crowded for room after the start. GEEL 12/12/2025 Race 6 Ladbrokes Top 2/3/4 Betting Handicap 1400M Buccleuch Slow to begin. Held up for clear running from the 500m until passing the 350m.FLEM 21/06/2025 Impending War Raced three wide and without cover from the 700m. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted and in particular the reasons for easing three wide from the one-out one-back position near the 700m, rider stated due to the moderate tempo elected to position mount three wide from the 700m to ensure the gelding would improve into the race and to avoid being held up. Rider noted mount, which was resuming, came under pressure from the 600m and did not corner well. WERR 07/12/2025 Millennium Blade Brushed near the 450m.FLEM 21/06/2025 Diamond Gust Slow into stride. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Had difficulty obtaining a clear run rounding the home turn. MORN 17/12/2025 Falset Star Slow to begin. PAKM20/03/2025 Our Chief Rdr could offer no explanation for performance other than horse may be better suited ridden with cover. Post race vet exam revealed no abs. Tnr concurred with views of rider and was not disappointed with performance of horse bearing in mind the circumstances of the race.FLEM 02/08/2025 The Volta Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Near the 100m shifted out abruptly to continue to improve. MORN 27/11/2025 Star Compass near the 200m had to be steadied when tightened MRPK 15/11/2025 Davida Knuckled severely as the start was effected, unbalancing rider. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Rider reported after his mount knuckled badly at the start, it then overraced and failed to run on. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant findings. CAUL 29/11/2025 Race 7 Pepsi Max Handicap 2025M Saint George (GB) Re-shod with standard plates in front after losing one of the race tips. Caught wide in the early stages, was allowed to stride forward and settle outside the leader near the 1400m. Rider reported instructed to settle closer from wide draw, had to do some work early which was detrimental to performance. Vet no abs. BRAT 06/12/2025 Bold Soul (NZ) Slow to begin. WERR 07/12/2025 Shaiyhar (IRE) Raced three wide without cover throughout. Eased down from the 200m. Rider reported felt something amiss. Vet no abs. Must jump-out prior to racing again. BRAT 06/12/2025 Cadmus (IRE) Dipped near the 600m. BRAT 06/12/2025 Verdad Restrained in the early stages. WERR 07/12/2025 Fortune (FR) Dipped and became unbalanced near the 200m. Rdr said mount did not feel comfortable in action. Post race vet exam revealed no abs. Co-Tnr said horse had pleased however felt horse raced flat and would now be freshened up prior to next race start.FLEM 06/11/2025 Lincoln Rocks (NZ) Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. KYNE 05/11/2025 Jenni’s Meadow Slow into stride. Raced wide from the 1000m. PAKM13/12/2025 Race 8 Gatorade Handicap 2025M Rich Champagne Rider could offer no explanation for the geldings performance other than it may be better suited to racing on tracks with more give. 2025 was always going to be a historic year in the history of the Moonee Valley Racing Club and the past 12 months didn’t let us down with plenty of highlights to re ect upon on the track. 1. VIA SISTINA – Ladbrokes Cox Plate In a way it was the perfect send-o , a W.S. Cox Plate thriller for the ages in front of a sell-out crowd of 22,000 patrons. The 105th running of ‘Australia’s Best Race’ certainly delivered as Via Sistina joined the greats as a dual winner of the W.S. Cox Plate and James McDonald recorded an incredible fourth consecutive win. The track record holder certainly had a ght on her hands in the form of Chris Waller’s stablemate Buckaroo and by saluting she became the rst eight-year-old mare to win the race. 2. PRIDE OF JENNI – Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes The last horse to win the Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes back-to-back was The Cleaner, who similar to Pride of Jenni had a cult following with their front-running racing styles. While Pride of Jenni might have been expected to win in 2024, it was a di erent story this year as she returned from a spell and with the new boom horse Treasurethe Moment on the scene. BARAQIEL – Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes & Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes The term ‘Valley Specialist’ can get thrown around but it’s certainly tting for the Team Corstens star Baraqiel who only enhanced his reputation in 2025. Baraqiel exclusively raced at The Valley in 2025 returning from a lengthy spell to win the Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes over 1000 metres and then a fortnight later was crowned with Group 1 glory to the cheer of a massive ownership group in the Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes. A brave runner-up placing in the Manikato Stakes rounded out his year and took his Valley record to four wins and a second from ve Valley starts. 4. ONESMOOTHOPERATOR – Ladbrokes Moonee Valley Gold Cup When the Geelong Cup was abandoned two days before the Ladbrokes Moonee Valley Gold Cup, trainer Brian Ellison made a swift decision the $750,000 feature would soon become his target race and what a decision it turned out to be. Now into his eight-year-old season and on his second Australian mission, Mark Zahra on his rst ride aboard the gelding certainly backed in his class looping his rivals from last to win. Onesmoothoperator joined the likes of Americain and Hunting Horn as internationals to win the race and went on to contest the Melbourne Cup. 5. OBSERVER – Drummond Golf Vase The last horse to complete the Moonee Valley Vase-VRC Derby double was E cient back in 2006 and Godolphin’s colt Observer could be on the same trajectory. As the shortest priced favourite on Cox Plate Day he didn’t let the punters down and the son of Ghaiyyath looks one of the most exciting prospects heading into 2026. Orbit Logistics Chautauqua Stakes winner Angel Capital and McMahon’s Dairy McKenzie Stakes winner Rosberg could also be bound for big things next year.
