Warrnambool

63 rose and took no part in the race. Burdened with 12.3 (77.5kg) in the 1927 Wangoom, Waranton finished a gallant fifth to the four-year old mare Hawkesdale, to whom he conceded 30kg. 50 YEARS AGO In 1976 Wandle, trained by Tom Retallick, became the third horse to win three Wangooms. Wandle returned to seek an unprecedented fourth Newmarket of the Bush in 1977 but was unplaced. Like Wandle, Pom Pom won his three Wangooms in successive years (1923 to 1925). Battleplane won in 1919 (aged 3), 1920 and 1922, carrying 11.1 (70.3kg) in his third win. Battleplane did not contest the 1921 renewal, which was won by the James Scobie trained Antarctic. 10 YEARS AGO Yesterday’s Songs enjoyed the wet track to win the 2016 Wangoom from the 2015 champion Royal Island. James Winks allowed Yesterday’s Songs to settle after he missed the start and kept him to the rail to win his first Warrnambool major. The late Michael Moroney, trainer of Yesterday’s Songs, trained many winners at Warrnambool, including the 2007 Warrnambool Cup with the subsequent dual Group 1 winner Sarrera. LAST YEAR 2024/2025 Country Racing Victoria Horse of the Year, Dashing, gave local trainer Aaron Purcell his third May Carnival major to go with the Grand Annual (Ginolad, 2008) and Gallewyood Hurdle (Two Hats, 2018). Purcell also won our big non-May Carnival feature, the Jericho Cup, with Farag in 2024 and 2025. Dashing was ridden by Tom Madden, who hails from a prominent Irish racing family.
