James Joseph “Jim” Houlahan (1913-2007) a legend of the the Australian turf and member of the Australian Racing and Warrnambool Racing Club Hall of Fame. The Iron Bar acknowledges the most important event in Jim's life, when as a nineteen year old, he rushed to the aid of his father who was being gored by an Ayrshire Bull. 12 Alfred Road: Now known as Moore Street, is the first road crossing in the steeplechase course. There was a road double there until 1999 when the reconstruction of the course proper necessitated the removal of the first fence of the double due to the camber of the course proper. The fence was replaced with one about half way between the old stand treble and Alfred Road. Al Garhood: The fence in Granter’s paddock carries the name of the only horse to have won two Grand Annuals (2010, 2011) and two Brierly Steeplechases (2008, 2009), and was inducted into the WRC Hall of Fame in 2024. Brierly paddock: When the new steeplechase course was laid out in 1872 it took in paddocks which were part of ‘Brierly’, andJames Granter’s paddock. By the end of the 1880s at least 150 acres of ‘Brierly’ had fallen into the hands of a syndicate which was likely to seek to sell that land to the highest bidder, possibly for housing. Prior to auction the WRC purchased that part of ‘Brierly’ which the steeplechase course traversed. After protracted and at times very tense negotiations, in 1899 the Racing Club purchased James Granter’s 15-acre paddock for £800. These purchases secured the unique Warrnambool Steeplechase course for generations to come. Buxton Bar: The bold front-runner Buxton secured the 1963 Brierly-Grand Annual double in dashing style. Keith Bullock, a member of a famous Western District racing family, trained Buxton and raced the gelding in partnership with his wife Enid. Corrigan Café: Tom Corrigan, an Australian Racing and WRC Hall of Fame member, was born in County Meath, Ireland and grew up on a farm at Woodford, north of Warrnambool. The merry little Irishman with the distinctive handlebar moustache was as much respected for his unquestionable integrity as he was admired for his skill as a jockey. His many wins at this course include four Grand Annuals. Corrigan’s death following a fall at Caulfield in August 1894 provoked a huge outpouring of grief as Melbourne came to a halt to farewell a true idol of the turf. Cox’s Hill/Cox’s Hill double: The highest point in the steeplechase course draws on the name of a Mr Cox, who once owned the paddock behind Granter’s paddock. Foxboy Bar: Foxboy scored a stunning win in the 1997 Grand Annual, giving trainer John Wheeler (a WRC Hall of Fame inductee in 2025) and rider Brett Scott their first win in the Annual, to complement Foxboy’s win in the Brierly two days earlier. Galleywood Bar: After the local hero Galleywood cleared the last fence in the 1986 Grand Annual and charged to the line race caller Bryan Martin hailed him as “Lazarus, back from the dead”. Two years earlier Galleywood had crashed at the last fence and in a “Kingston Town Can’t Win” moment course broadcaster Bill Collins foreshadowed the worst as the local hero lay motionless on the track. Galleywood’s other wins here include the Brierly Steeplechase in 1983 and 1986. WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Goodalls: The first fence in the short steeplechase course is known as Goodalls, and takes its name from Goodall’s farm, which at the time racing commenced on this site in 1858 was adjacent to where this fence is located. Houlahan Treble: Trainer James Joseph “Jim” Houlahan (19132007), an Australian Racing and WRC Hall of Fame member, won four Grand Annuals – a race he loved dearly – eight Brierlys, a Galleywood Hurdle, and a Wangoom Handicap. His countless other wins include seven Grand National Hurdles. Laff’s Bar: Situated in the Woodford Lounge, this bar is named in honour of WRC Hall of Fame member Kevin Joseph Lafferty (1912-1987). Lafferty’s hundreds of wins include five Brierlys, three Grand Annuals, two Warrnambool Cups and a Wangoom. Lindsay Lounge: WRC Hall of Fame member William Lindsay of ‘The Union’, Woolsthorpe, served as chairman of the WRC for a record 32 years, from 1902 until his death on 14 August 1934. Mantrap/Mantrap Bar: The Mantrap is the first fence after the field turns left upon re-entering the racecourse reserve on the first lap in the Grand Annual. It was originally a parapet and ditch, and probably got its name because it was a very formidable obstacle. It is now jumped only in the Annual following changes to the steeplechase course around 1970, which see steeplechases finish in an anti-clockwise direction. Moloney Room: Jerry Moloney (1883-1963) was a leading trainer, based in Warrnambool, for several decades - winning two Grand Annuals, two Warrnambool Cups and three Brierlys. Jerry’s son Jim (1924-2015), an Australian Racing Hall of Fame member, started his training career here. Jim won three Warrnambool Cups, including with Warri Symbol and Sarfraz – both ridden by Pat Hyland who shared a close personal and professional relationship with Moloney after serving his apprenticeship with him. Tozer Road/Tozer Road double: Francis Tozer (1820-1905), a WRC Hall of Fame member, was the most influential person in the early years of racing in Warrnambool. He was one of the founding trustees of the new racing and recreation reserve, a steward at the first Winter Steeplechase Meeting, assisted in laying out the new steeplechase course, was instrumental in the formation of the WRC and a member of its first committee, a prominent owner and breeder, and helped launch the riding career of Tommy Corrigan. Woodford Lounge: The Woodford Racing Club was formed in 1900. It raced at Woodford until 1941 and commenced racing at Warrnambool in 1945 following a break due to World War II. The club continues to hold a very successful annual meeting on New Year’s Eve. 34th Jump Bar: As golf has its 19th hole, this racecourse has the 34th Jump Bar – drawing on the fact that there are 33 fences in our iconic Grand Annual Steeplechase. 14 Who, indeed who in their right mind one might boldly ask, would propose as a new race a 4600 metre BM90 flat race restricted, in the true ANZAC spirit, to horses bred in Australia and New Zealand, and limited to jumping riders? And who would possess the vision, passion and determination to bring such a race to fruition and make it a resounding success? William John Brooker Gibbins that’s who! When Bill Gibbins first pitched his idea for the Jericho Cup one senior racing power broker (later a great convert to the race) challenged Bill that he wouldn’t get a field. Bill replied, channelling the Australian Diggers’ disinclination to be cowed by those in positions of authority, “I’ll give you 250,000 reasons why I’ll get a field”. And he did give those reasons! Bill and his wife Iolanda funded most of the prizemoney and the beautiful trophies for the first four runnings of the race. The backstory to the modern Jericho Cup is well known. About a decade ago a friend of Iolanda gave Bill a copy of Roland Perry’s epic tale Bill the Bastard, the story of arguably Australia’s greatest war horse and the first Jericho Cup, run in Palestine in 1918. Approaching the end of World War I the Australian Light Horse were planning a major offensive against the Turkish forces. In order to lull the enemy into a false sense of security, a race meeting was conducted on the eve of the assault. (1947-2025) BILL GIBBINS AM
A few months after Bill had been given the book, Iolanda asked him if he had read it. Bill, who Iolanda sometimes referred to as Bill the Bastard, had to sheepishly admit that he had not. Suitably chastised, Bill then opened the book, and could not put it down. Captivated by the story, Bill decided that he would recreate the Jericho Cup in honour of Australian service personnel, in particular the Light Horsemen and their brave mounts, the Walers. Bill’s vision, passion, determination and no-nonsense can-do attitude meant that once he set his mind to something it invariably came to fruition. So it was with the Jericho Cup. Bill, who had been a regular at the May Carnival for decades, was adamant he wanted the race to be run at Warrnambool. The modern Jericho Cup was run for the first time on Sunday 2 December 2018. And true to Bill’s conviction that he would “get a field”, in each year there has been a consolation race for those horses who do not make it into the Cup field. Bill’s generosity was legendary, and was in no way limited to Warrnambool or the wider racing industry. In a deeply moving tribute at Bill’s funeral Iolanda quipped “I thought we’d end up on the pension because he was giving it all away.” One further example is that when the Rats of Tobruk could no longer afford the upkeep of their Albert Park headquarters where they had gathered for nearly 50 years Bill outbid property developers to buy the property. He then told the Rats that they could stay in the property as long as they needed it. It is no exaggeration to say that Bill Gibbins is one of the most significant and treasured people in the 153 year history of the Warrnambool Racing Club. Bill and Iolanda are both life members of the Warrnambool Racing Club and Bill was inducted into the WRC Hall of Fame in 2024. Jericho Cup day will not feel the same this year, but it will be a further and important opportunity to honour and celebrate Bill’s memory. Mark McNamara: April 2026
Patrick Thomas Hyland was born at Port Fairy and went on to become one of the South-West’s greatest sporting exports. Pat disliked school and Sister Anastasia suggested to his father that if he could get his son a job he should leave school. Frank Hyland got Pat a job at the Port Fairy Post Office, at the age of 13. A chance encounter fired Pat’s imagination and spawned a dream he fully realised. One day, while delivering soft drink to his parent’s café in Port Fairy, star apprentice Geoff Lane’s uncle said to Pat that he was so small he should become a jockey. Pat was inspired to join Jim Moloney’s stables in Warrnambool. Shortly after this Moloney told Hyland that he was moving to Melbourne. Desperate to be a jockey, Pat was off to the big smoke too. Hyland and Moloney formed one of the most successful partnerships in Australian racing history, underpinned by a deep and abiding friendship. Pat rode the first of his more than 2,300 winners on Jeratha, which Moloney trained, in a Maiden Plate at Ballarat in February 1958 at the age of 16. Their last major win came in the 1985 Centenary Goodwood Handicap with Mighty Avenger, after Hyland returned from serious injury to take the mount. The zenith of their association came with the numerous wins of the champion sprinter Vain. Hyland had his first ride at Warrnambool in the 1958 Wangoom Handicap, finishing second on the Moloney trained Firth. The first of Hyland’s many winning rides at (1941-2026) PAT HYLAND
Warrnambool was in a Maiden Plate at the Summer Meeting in January 1962. Hyland scored his first major win in the 1963 Victoria Derby, on Craftsman. The following autumn he won the Newmarket Handicap on Rashlore and the Australian Cup on Grand Print. He won the Australian Cup again in 1965 and 1966, on Craftsman. Hyland is one of the few riders to have won the grand slam: Melbourne Cup (What A Nuisance, 1985), Caulfield Cup (Affinity, 1984), Cox Plate (Star Affair, 1965), and Golden Slipper (Vain, 1969). Hyland married Maree Marshall and they remained devoted to one another until Hyland took his last breath. They had six children: Paul, Matthew, Christopher, Joanne, Samuel and Patrick. Sam won the Warrnambool Cup in 1998 on Asagain and in 2008 on Video Star, while Chris trained the winners of the 2008 Galleywood Hurdle (Weeping Willow) and the 2022 Warrnambool Cup (Witchachar Star). The combination of Jim Moloney and Pat Hyland won successive Warrnambool Cups with Warri Symbol (1979) and Sarfraz (1980). After his win on Sarfraz Hyland commented that for his mother having her son win the local Cup was better than him winning any other race, even the Melbourne Cup. Hyland had his last rides at the May Carnival in 1990 and did not renew his jockey’s license for the 1990-91 season. Punters rallied for a fairy tale when he rode Tantieme (109 favourite) for Jim Moloney in the final event of the 1990 carnival, but he finished only fifth. It was therefore fitting that Hyland’s last win at Warrnambool was on Instant Policy in the Kevin Lafferty Class 4 Handicap on the Wednesday, as Hyland’s father Frank had attended primary school with Lafferty in Port Fairy. The VRC granted Hyland an honorary jockey’s badge in recognition of his stellar career and his service as president of the Victorian Jockeys Association, of which Matthew Hyland is now the CEO. Pat Hyland began training in late 1990. Best Endeavours had been his last ride in a race and was with Hyland from his first day as a trainer. The gelding won the 1996 VRC Grand National Steeplechase and finished sixth in the 1998 Grand Annual. Hyland enjoyed group one success as a trainer with Saleous, Zarita and Bonaria. In 2016 Pat joined his great mate Jim Moloney as a member of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. The WRC extends its condolences to Pat’s family and many friends. Mark McNamara: April 2026

Around the time of the first May Carnival (1881) many visiting horses arrived at Warrnambool by steamship, disembarking at Lady Bay before being walked to the racecourse or to local stables. Lady Bay, on the shores of which Warrnambool was built, has for more than 100 years been an important asset for local trainers in the preparation of their horses. Lady Bay now lends its name to the Lady Bay Cup on our racecourse, to be decided over three days and thirty races. The Lady Bay Cup will be awarded to the ‘team’ of trainers that wins the most races at the TAB May Racing Carnival, pitting The Locals - trainers based in the Warrnambool area - against The Visitors. The cup celebrates the dedication and hard-work of the trainers and the critical role they play in the racing industry. So in this “Us Against Them” battle who will win the most races at the carnival – The Locals or The Visitors? We encourage you to add further to the wonderful atmosphere on the course this week by cheering home your team in the Lady Bay Cup. THE LADY BAY CUP
