WELCOME TO LADBROKES FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS AT SOUTHSIDE PAKENHAM. Tonight’s feature event is the $200,000 Listed Manhari Torney Night Cup over 2500 metres. The race honours the late Geoff Torney AM, who served 14 years on the MVRC Committee and was Chairman from 1997 to 2002, making a significant contribution to the Club and the racing industry over four decades. Last year’s Cup was won impressively by Deakin, and we look forward to another strong contest this evening. Tonight, we also pay tribute to Australian Racing Hall of Fame members Makybe Diva and Pat Hyland, both of whom we sadly lost this week. Makybe Diva’s 2005 W.S. Cox Plate victory formed part of a remarkable career that included three consecutive Melbourne Cups, while Pat Hyland achieved Australian racing’s ‘grand slam’ as a jockey, including the 1965 Cox Plate, and later enjoyed outstanding success as a trainer. I encourage you to join us next Friday, either on course at Southside Cranbourne for our final Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights meeting of the 2025/26 season, or at the Members’ Hub at Legends. Thank you for your continued support, and I trust you enjoy the evening’s racing. CHAIR ADAM LENNEN CHAIR’S WELCOME

BY BEN SPORLE The Cox Plate lost one of the most illustrious members of its prestigious honour roll last week with the passing of the LEGENDARY Makybe Diva. The Lee Freedman-trained champion claimed a memorable 2005 edition of ‘Australia’s Best Race’ made famous by a wall of horses taking off at the 500-metre mark. The victory would become her second last race start before she would go on to win a historic third Melbourne Cup. 33,153 people turned out to The Valley with 10,000 red, white and blue masks handed out to adoring racegoers as she became the first mare to complete the Melbourne Cup-Cox Plate double. THE MARE WHO MADE HISTORY: HONOURING MAKYBE DIVA
13 “She changed my life forever,” Glen Boss told the MVRC on reflection. “She left a huge hoofprint not only in our sport but in Australian history. “Because what she created was that unique, that might not be done again.” The daughter of Desert King finished fourth in a Benalla maiden on debut in 2002 but would then go on to win her next six starts in her initial campaign on her rise to stardom. Makybe Diva also raced in the Feehan Stakes at The Valley on two occasions and was beaten a nose in both the 2004 and 2005 editions by Delzao and Lad of the Manor. She was aged 27 and had resided at owner Tony Santic’s Makybe Stud in Gnarwarre. “When I saw her a few months ago, she was looking so good and healthy, but I couldn’t help but feel as I left her, that this could be the last time,” Boss told Racing.com last week. “She looked healthy, but at that age, they are so close to the end. “I definitely had that feeling I might not ever see her again. I would have loved to have seen her one more time but I had that feeling that might be it and we sort of had our goodbye in a way.”
14 VALE PAT HYLAND The Moonee Valley Racing Club pays tribute to Australian Racing Hall of Fame member Pat Hyland. As a jockey, Hyland achieved Australian racing’s ‘grand slam’ with victories in the Golden Slipper, Cauleld Cup, Melbourne Cup and the W.S. Cox Plate, winning the Cox Plate in 1965 aboard the Angus Armanasco-trained Star Affair. His distinguished career in the saddle included 30 Group 1 victories. He later enjoyed outstanding success as a trainer, preparing more than 500 winners. Among the best of those was Group 1-winning mare Zarita, who nished fourth in the 2008 Cox Plate and won both the Stocks Stakes and the Sunline Stakes at The Valley. Pat Hyland is survived by his wife Maree, daughter Joanne, sons Paul, Matthew, Chris, Samuel and Patrick, and 17 grandchildren. 1941-2026
