The Tea Rose Stakes are named for the filly Tea Rose (Mr Standfast – Tea Table). She made her name in 1944 when she won the AJC Derby, the first filly to do so since 1898. She was trained by A. G. Anderson and over her racing career had six wins from 28 starts. As well as her Derby success, Tea Rose scored victories in the Rosehill Guineas and Craven Stakes. The race in her honour began many years later in 1980. A race for three-year-old fillies at set weights, it is now recognised as the second leg of the “Princess Series”. The four races in the Princess Series, allow for fillies and mares to strut their stuff. The Tea Rose Stakes provides a good indicator for the later Flight Stakes, with many placegetters in the Tea Rose figuring in the finish of the Flight Stakes. Only Angst (1993) and Samantha Miss (2008) have taken out the full series. Guelph (2013) has the fastest time over the 1400m with 1.22.1.
