The Bill Ritchie Handicap W. M. Ritchie 21.4.1913 – 15.12.1990 Bill Ritchie was a Sydney businessman with a lifelong passion for horse racing. An owner, a breeder and a punter, he was a fixture on Sydney racetracks. At his beloved Bangaloe Stud on the Central Coast, he bred hundreds of winners and cultivated prominent breeding families. With champions trained by the likes of Tommy Smith, Bart Cummings, Neville Begg and Pat Murray, Ritchie’s track record continues with the next generation of Cummings and Waterhouse. Bill’s priorities in life were his family, business, horses and philanthropy. He gave back to the country that afforded him so much success. Bill is still missed by all who knew and loved him at the track. His passion for racing lives on in his daughter Julia and grandsons Bill and Patrick. Today, The Bill and Patricia Ritchie Foundation endows a Professorial Chair in Immunology at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. The exciting initiatives at Garvan are seeking to unlock the secrets of autoimmune illnesses. This groundbreaking work would have appealed to the visionary in Bill Ritchie.
