Shannon was a famous Australian racehorse of the 1940’s. He won numerous races including the Hobartville Stakes, Sires’ Produce Stakes, Epsom, George Main Stakes (twice) and the Theo Marks Stakes. He started for a second time in the Epsom in 1946 (after his win in 1945), left at the start by 50 metres, his jockey Darby Munro rallied him and he only lost the race by a half head. Shannon left Australia for America and became one of America’s best racehorses in the late 1940’s. The race named for him began in 1978 and was won by For All Seasons with jockey Ron Quinton aboard. Quinton would also win on Dalmacia (NZ) in 1982, Eastern Bay (NZ) in 1984 and Never Quit (NZ) in 1987. Never Quit became a dual winner, crossing again for the win in 1988. In the 90's, the race was won by some of the era’s leading milers, including Soho Square (1993), Sprint By (NZ) (1995) and Juggler (1996).
