Initially run as a 2-mile race, since 1989 the race has been run over 1600m. The historic cup was a Listed race from 1980 to 1995 and has been a Group 3 since 1999. Australian Hall of Fame inductee Poseidon won the 1906 Hawkesbury Gold Cup, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup. Dual winners of the race include Archedemus (2019, 2021), Huge Demand (1999, 2000), Magic Road (1995, 1996), Welcome Twist (1907, 1908) and Dagworth (1872, 1873). The Pearl ran 2nd in the inaugural running of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in 1871 and went on to win the 1871 Melbourne Cup at a staggering 100-1. Thrifty Reserve (1993) holds the race and track record for 1600m at 1:32.99. Thrifty Reserve ran 3rd in 1991, 2nd in 1992 and won the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in 1993. Sons Of John trained by Jason Attard won the Gold Cup in 2015 and is the most recent Hawkesbury trained horse to win the race.
