Deciding to give the 10-year- old a start at Parkes, Heidi Smith was rewarded for the long journey when Meteor’s Man (Clayton Gallagher) reeled in the leaders to win the 1000m Telescope Tyres & Batteries Benchmark 50 Handicap from Jewel of the Clan (Jake Pracey-Holmes) and Three Rar (Daniel Northey). Sent to the early lead by Ken Dunbar, the Terry Fahey, Narromine-trained Hireach won the 800m Carpet Choice Parkes Maiden Plate by nearly five lengths from In the Mail (Clayton Gallagher) and Cod Bye (Stephane Joseph). Parkes Jockey Club had a big charity event planned for the McGrath Foundation, however, due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic, a state-wide lockdown was announced, to commence that day, and there was no public admittance, no tote, no bookmakers and no betting prices for the meeting. PROMISE HAS A PICNIC On target for the $50,000 NSW Picnic Champions Series Final at Coonamble on 10 October, the Brett Robb-trained On a Promise kept the campaign rolling when an impressive winner at the Gilgandra non-TAB meeting. Owned by a keen group of racing fans from Lake Cargelligo, On a Promise ridden by Clayton Gallagher was backed from $3.40 to $2 favourite and after being challenged on the home turn, shot away to win the 1200m QUBE Logistics Benchmark 50 Handicap by almost three lengths from He’s Our Toy Boy (Brooke Stower, $13) and Streets of Suemori (Zara Lewis, $12). Continuing a successful association, Dubbo trainer Garry Lunn and jockey Billy Cray had a winning double with Dissisoul and Jarmanagic. Under pressure before the home turn, Dissisoul ($2 fav) wore down Leopardwood ($2.70) and More Power ($8) in the 1000m Farewell Todd Smith Maiden Plate while Jarmanagic ($8.50) shared the lead then kicked clear to beat Byzantium ($3.30 fav) and Son of Spartacus ($14) by nearly three lengths in the 1000m MCC Hydraulics Benchmark 5 Handicap. Within a couple of days of 12 months since she broke her back when a horse flipped over at Grafton, talented jockey Brooke Stower made a remarkable return to race riding in the opening event at Gilgandra. Although she did not win, Brooke gave her mount Jade ($4.20 to $2.80 fav) every chance before finishing a close third behind the Maree Hopkins, Queanbeyan- trained winner Marcee (Michael Heagney, $5.50) and Winter Moon (Stephane Joseph, $3.20) in the 1280m Geronimo Farm Equipment Maiden Plate.
