Warrnambool

70 150 YEARS AGO In 1875 Wollomai became the first, and still the only, horse to win the Warrnambool and Melbourne Cups in the same year. Wollomai finished second in the Australian Cup a couple of weeks before winning the Warrnambool Cup by a length. The following day he won the Hotelkeepers’ Handicap over a mile and a half. Bill Enderson rode Wollomai in his two Warrnambool victories. Enderson rode with success on the flat and over jumps. He finished third in the first Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase (Grand Annual) in 1872 and fourth in the first Warrnambool Cup in 1873. In between those rides, Enderson won the 1872 Melbourne Cup on The Quack. Apart from Wollomai only four Melbourne Cup winners have raced at Warrnambool. In 1874, the three-year-old gelding Haricot scored an impressive win on debut in the Amateur Turf Club Plate, racing in the nomination of Robert Chirnside junior and ridden by him. Two days Haricot won the weight-for-age All Aged Stakes on the second day of the WRC’s Annual (March) Races. On that occasion he raced in the nomination of Andrew Chirnside. The Parisian won the 1910 Warrnambool Cup and the Melbourne Cup the following year. Piping Lane finished third in the 1972 Warrnambool Cup before winning the first metric Melbourne Cup six months later. Vow and Declare won his maiden here in October 2018 and the Melbourne Cup the following year. Mystery Island ridden by Harry Coffey wins the 2024 Sungold Milk Warrnambool Cup.
