25 John initiated Hammonds’ sponsorship of races at Warrnambool, with its first major sponsorship being the Dulux Warrnambool Cup of 1981. After winning the Hammonds Dulux Warrnambool Cup in 1987 with Top Banner, ridden by WRC Hall of Fame member Harry White, the gelding’s trainer Jim Cerchi quipped during the presentation “I needed some more Dulux paint for my old truck. It hasn’t been painted since Top Ware won in 1981.” John served on the WRC committee from 1972 to 2000, including as chairman in 1982 and 1983, and was a life member of the club. John’s son Nick was also chairman of the WRC and a member of the committee for 12 years, stepping down in October last year. John also served as a board member of the Country Racing Council, now Country Racing Victoria. John’s first successes here as an owner came with Pep Talk in the 1967 Woodford and Purnim Cups. He raced Duke Pierre, which finish second in the 1969 Brierly Steeplechase, and tasted success in the 1986 and 1987 Wangoom Handicaps with Night of Oscar. John was a selfless contributor to, loyal supporter of, and dedicated advocate for the WRC. The club is delighted to honour John, in conjunction with his family, with the running of the John Rule Champion Novice Hurdle. Mark McNamara: April 2025
