Royal Randwick

The Sydney Cup was introduced to the autumn meeting in 1866 and has since been consistently run at Randwick. Contested over 3200m the race gives stayers a chance to shine. As a staying race, the Sydney Cup has often favoured older horses. River Seine won in 1965 as a nine year old, after first contesting the race in 1962 when he finished second to Grand Print. He returned in 1964 to run third behind Summer Regent and Zinga Lee, before lining up again in 1966 and finishing well down the field. County Tyrone was eight when he claimed the 2006 Sydney Cup, finally breaking through after a string of close calls. He had first run in the race in 2003, finishing second to Honor Babe (NZ), then placed fourth in 2004 and second again in 2005 behind Mahtoum. He finally broke through in 2006, winning by 3½ lengths, before returning to the Cup twice more and finishing unplaced on both occasions.
