Warrnambool

47 Last year Champion rider Brett Scott built an imposing record in our feature jumping events, snaring four Grand Annuals and three Brierlys – all on steeds trained by John Wheeler. Those wins included the Brierly-Grand Annual double on Foxboy (1997), The Sundance Kid (1998) and Frankoo Verymuch (2005). Scott’s many successes away from Warrnambool included three wins Nakayama Grand Jump (2005 – 2007) on the Eric Musgrove trained Karasi. The Galleywood Hurdle eluded Scott during his career in the saddle. One of Scott’s greatest performances was to train The Statesman to win last year’s Galleywood Hurdle. Two months earlier Scott was in an induced coma after being kicked by a horse at his Mornington property. The Statesman’s win was incredibly popular, despite the starting price of $17, as racegoers acclaimed the miracle of Scott’s recovery and rejoiced in the fact that he was on course to witness the win.
