47 Meander Son was sent to leading jumps trainer Kath Smith, who was based at Mornington, about three weeks prior to the Annual. Smith’s late husband Brian Smith had ridden three winners of the Brierly and two winners of the Annual between 1948 and 1954, including the double on High Flash in 1948. After easily winning the Brierly, Meander Son was installed as favourite for the Grand Annual. Arthur Hounsell allowed the gelding to roll to the front at the start of the second lap in the Annual and he won easily.
