26 George Taylor OAM was a great family man, intelligent businessman, tireless community worker and one of the greatest supporters of racing the Warrnambool Racing Club has known. George put his racing passion to good work, serving on the Warrnambool Racing Club Committee from 1974 to 1996 and as Chairman from 1983 to 1985. Throughout his life, George Taylor raced 101 winners, amongst them some very fine gallopers. Fonda Moor won 10 races, D’Asti Cati had a remarkable record of 23 wins including the Wangoom Handicap in 1981. It was jumps racing though that provided George with his proudest racing moment. George was managing owner of Galleywood who won the 1986 Grand Annual Steeplechase, two years after famously falling and springing back to life in front of a relieved crowd at the 1984 Warrnambool May Racing Carnival. George was awarded life membership of the Warrnambool Racing Club in 1996. In 2014 he was presented with the Iron Bar Award which recognised his outstanding contribution to racing while displaying courage and integrity. He was also more widely recognised with the Warrnambool Citizenship Award in 1993 and an Order of Australia Medal in 2008. Allan George Taylor will be remembered fondly by the local racing community and is survived by his wife Gwyn, four children, twelve grand-children and now two great grandchildren.
