84 Starting out as a medical practitioner in Hobart, Dr Brendan Nelson was awarded the Australian Medical Association (AMA)’s highest honour, the Gold Medal for “Distinguished Service to Medicine and Humanity” before being elected leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, serving as Leader of the Opposition. After retiring from federal politics, Dr Nelson became the Australian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the EU and NATO, forging deep links with the communities of Flanders, where almost 14,000 Australians lost their lives during the First World War. In January 2016, Dr Nelson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his services to the community, the parliament of Australia, diplomacy and cultural leadership. In 2018, the RSL conferred Honorary Life Membership upon Dr Nelson for his services to and support of veterans and ex-service organisations. “Dr Nelson has ensured the stories of an entire new generation of service are told and remembered alongside those that inspired their own sacrifice and to do the same for future generations."
