When questioned regarding Newcombe settling in a handy position without cover rider explained due to wide barrier he was instructed to ride the gelding further forward than at its most recent starts. Trainer explained from the wide barrier he had instructed rider to be positive and attempt to gain cover mid-field and did not expect Newcombe to be as far forward as it settled in running.
