Moonee Valley Racing Club respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to its Elders past, present and emerging. With the year drawing to a close, it gives us a chance to reflect on a remarkable year of racing at The Valley. There have been a number of highlights across the calendar year, including the thrilling victory by Hong Kong’s 2000-metre champion Romantic Warrior in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, Imperatriz’s clean sweep of the Group 1 sprints, the 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes, Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes, and Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, and Mr Brightside’s win in the Sharp EIT All-Star Mile. We have a short break from racing following today’s meeting, before returning on January 27 for a big card featuring the Group 2 Australia Stakes. It’s the start of seven-straight weeks of racing, with the Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights series firing back up through February and into March, before the season draws to a close on March 23 with 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day. A heartfelt appreciation goes out to all our members and partners for their unwavering support, without which the remarkable accomplishments of 2023 would not have been possible. I’d like to wish you all a safe and happy New Year and look forward to seeing you back at The Valley in 2024. CHAIR ADAM LENNEN CHAIR’S WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO OUR FINAL MEETING OF 2023.

5 Thankyou TODAY'S RACE SPONSORS PRINCIPAL PARTNER

THE VALLEY’S TOP 5 RACING HIGHLIGHTS OF 2023 By Ben Caluzzi 2023 HAS HAD IT ALL HERE AT THE VALLEY! RECORDS WERE BROKEN, HISTORY WAS MADE, AND AUSTRALIA’S BEST RACE DELIVERED ON THE WORLD STAGE YET AGAIN. FROM LADBROKES FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS TO THE TRADITIONAL BLACK€TYPE CARD ON COX PLATE DAY, THERE’S BEEN HIGHLIGHTS ON EVERY FRONT, AND HERE IS HOW WE ORDERED THE TOP 5…

5. Mr Brightside wins the $5 million Sharp EIT All-Star Mile, later returns a runner-up in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate Coming in to the 2023 Sharp EIT All-Star Mile, the title for Australia’s Best Miler was still very much up for grabs, with Weight For Age beasts Alligator Blood, I’m Thunderstruck and Mr Brightside all battling it out in style. On a scorching day at The Valley, thankfully relieved by some welcome cloud cover, Lindsay Park’s Mr Brightside saluted in the Mile, donning the colours made famous by 1990 W.S. Cox Plate winner Better Loosen Up. His performances later that Autumn and into the Spring confirmed he is indeed Australia’s best 1600-metre horse, winning his second Doncaster Mile as well as the Makybe Diva Stakes. Mr Brightside went on to run 2nd in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, where it took a champion from Hong Kong to defeat him. His incredible record at The Valley now reads 5: 3-1-0, the most successful track of his career to date. 4. Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights Season Launch the best yet on AFL Grand Final Eve The Valley was buzzing on AFL Grand Final Eve this year as we launched the Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights Season with a bang. In fact, many called it the best night of racing they’d ever been to, including one winning trainer from the west. That trainer was Simon Miller, who trained Amelia’s Jewel to victory in the Ladbrokes Stocks Stakes. Thirty minutes later, another world-class mare Imperatriz took out the Group 1 Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes. But it was the action off the track that stood this night apart from the rest, as popular jockey and part-time DJ Ben Allen spun the decks on the front lawn and kept the crowd entertained all night. The after party continued well after the last, and had it been allowed to, would have gone even longer.

3. Racing farewells the GOAT Damien Oliver in his final Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival 2023 marked the final year of race riding for the greatest jockey Australia has ever seen – Damien Oliver. A dual W.S. Cox Plate winner on Dane Ripper in 1997 and famously on Northerly in 2001, it was a final occasion for everything for the GOAT this year, including his last Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival. Ollie didn’t take long to put his name up in lights again. He rode the first winner on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Eve with Celui and made it a double in Heat 3 the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge – saluting on Frilled. The next day he received a guard of honour formed by all the jocks and rode the bolter Duais ($31) in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, finished a slashing 4th and unlucky not to have gone closer! 2. Imperatriz becomes the first horse to complete The Valley Sprint Triple Crown Only one horse has won the three major sprints at The Valley in the same year – Manikato himself. But this year was the first time a horse had completed the feat since all three races had held Group 1 status, and it was the Kiwi terror from Te Akau, Imperatriz who achieved the remarkable feat. She won the 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes in the Autumn, gave them windburn in the Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes, then showed her versatility when leading all the way to win the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes on Cox Plate Day! She even gave Giga Kick a start and a beating in the Mittys McEwen Stakes early in the Spring, giving her the perfect 4/4 record at The Valley! She just loves it here…

1. The Ladbrokes Cox Plate goes to Hong Kong for the first time as Romantic Warrior wins a thriller James McDonald has been Australia’s best jockey for the last two seasons, but this year he also assumed an assistant trainer role with Danny Shum’s Romantic Warrior, who he had ridden in Hong Kong to great effect. Jmac was an integral part of bringing the Hong Kong superstar over, and when he underperformed in the Turnbull Stakes, only managing 4th, the alarm bells were ringing. The Romantic Warrior team did a remarkable job to improve him in the remaining timeframe they had, and on the big day he was fit enough to win Australia’s Best Race by the barest of margins! In the shadows of the post, it appeared as if Mr Brightisde might have won, but after enjoying the perfect run, Romantic Warrior made a last gasp lunge and McDonald lifted him to victory, becoming the first Hong Kong trained horse to win the Ladbrokes Cox Plate and giving Jmac his second consecutive Cox Plate victory. The 123-rated international returned home and went back-to-back in the Hong Kong Cup, proving his worth again as one of the world’s elite 2000-metre horses.
