HELLO AND WELCOME TO LADBROKES FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS WITH THE VALLEY AT SOUTHSIDE CRANBOURNE. We are in the midst of an exciting period of racing under lights at Southside, which kicked off last week with the running of the Group 2 Clamms Seafood Australia Stakes at Pakenham. Congratulations to the connections of Hedged on a terrific victory in that feature event. Tonight’s program includes the third heat of Series 2 of the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge, along with the opening heats of both The Valley Summer Middle Distance Series and The Valley Summer Sprint Series, setting the stage for some competitive and entertaining racing. We are also proud to be supporting Down Syndrome Victoria as our Cheering For Charity partner this evening. With a winner on the night, we hope to be cheering home a $2,000 donation for this wonderful cause. Thank you for your continued support of our transferred meetings, whether you are joining us on track or at our Members’ Hub at Legends. BY BEN SPORLE Gavin Bedggood and Harry Co ey were the toast of Pakenham last Friday evening when Hedged claimed the $350,000 G2 Clamms Seafood Australia Stakes (1200m). The race was the rst ever Group 2 contest conducted at Pakenham as The Valley undergoes its once-in-a-generation transformation, a race that has previously seen the likes of Black Caviar raise the trophy. The past ve winners of the Australia Stakes have all gone onto Group 1 glory in Streets of Avalon, Marabi, Jigsaw, Veight and Schwarz all now winners at the highest level and connections Roll The Dice Racing will be hoping Hedged can do the same. A dominant winner of the Listed Christmas Stakes on Boxing Day, the son of Capitalist bounced backed to form leaving Group 1 winners Veight and War Machine behind him. 13 A $140,000 yearling purchase, last weeks victory took the ve-year-olds prizemoney past $1 million. Having only ridden the gelding in his last three starts, Harry Co ey has now ridden Hedged to the biggest two victories in his career. “I’ve had three rides on him for two wins and people say ‘you must have the key to him’,” Co ey said. “But he is very unique - he is a bit of an unusual individual. “Both times he has won he has been dynamic and ran right through the line which has been when he’s been outside of horses.” It was another Group success in the training career of Gavin Bedggood, who trained his maiden Group 1 winner at The Valley with Mornington Glory at The Valley in the 2024 Moir Stakes.
