Moonee Valley Racing Club respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to its Elders past, present and emerging. On Saturday, the Moonee Valley Racing Club has the honour of inducting our first long serving female members with Life Membership of the Club. In 1978 the MVRC was the first club to introduce a new financial membership offering for female patrons, replacing the previous guest cardholder system. The remaining race clubs followed suit in 1982 and the MCC in 1984. Today is a very proud moment for the Club and we sincerely thank Maureen Salter, Frances Gibson, and Gwenda Fitzgerald for their ongoing support over the journey and welcome them as Life Members of the MVRC. With the season drawing to a close, we reflect on some magnificent highlights from the past year, headlined by the Centenary running of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate. It was a terrific showcase of Australia’s Best Race, with Anamoe for James Cummings and James McDonald, adding their name to the honour roll of champions in front of a big crowd. The Valley hosted the Sharp EIT All-Star Mile for a second time, and it was Mr Brightside for Ben & JD Hayes who claimed the prize in the fan-voted race. Meanwhile. it was the fillies and mares who dominated the Group 1 sprints, with Coolangatta taking out the Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes, Bella Nipotina claimed a big victory in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, and top Kiwi sprinter Imperatriz starred under lights in the 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes. We loved being able to welcome back crowds, in particular our members, to The Valley throughout the season following a couple of challenging years. I would also like to thank our partners for their support in making the 2022/23 season such a success. Enjoy Dominant Saturday at The Valley and I can’t wait to see you trackside again on Saturday, August 12 as we celebrate the start of the new season. CHAIR ADAM LENNEN CHAIR’S WELCOME IT IS GREAT TO HAVE RACING BACK FOR DOMINANT SATURDAY AT THE VALLEY AS WE ROUND OUT A FANTASTIC 2022/23 SEASON. THE COURSE IS IN TREMENDOUS ORDER AHEAD OF THE BIG CARD OF RACING, WITH TRACK MANAGER MARTY SYNAN AND HIS TEAM DOING AN OUTSTANDING JOB WITH THE REFURBISHMENT DURING THE BREAK.

ROBERT CRAM It is a great privilege to know that Robert Cram will see out his final metropolitan race meeting here at The Valley today, Saturday 29th July 2023 as Chairman of Stewards, Racing Victoria. Cram announced his retirement last month after 41 years of service to the Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Industry. Cram was first employed by the Victoria Racing Club as a Cadet Steward in 1982. He assumed the role of Chairman of Stewards in the South Western, Ballarat District and Northern District regions of Victoria, while also serving as the Director of the State's Apprentice Jockey Training Program from 1991-1996. Cram was elevated to the position of Senior Stipendiary Steward in 1996, before being appointed Deputy Chairman of Stewards - Non Raceday Integrity & Compliance by RV in 2005. He then assumed the role of Manager - Integrity Services for two years from 2008 before returning to the position of Deputy Chairman of Stewards in 2010. Robert Cram was promoted to Chairman of Stewards in 2018 and retires at the completion of this 2023/23 season after five years in the role. The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) thanks Robert for his commitment and tireless dedication to the upholding of the integrity of racing and wishes him well in his retirement. BY BEN CALUZZI HEDGED GELDED & SET TO LET RIP SPEEDY CAPITALIST GELDING HEDGED WILL BE OUT TO RIGHT THE WRONGS OF HIS DEBUT PERFORMANCE THIS SATURDAY WHEN HE STEPS OUT FOR MICK PRICE AND MICHAEL KENT JNR IN THE 1000 METRE TWO YEAR OLD EVENT AT THE VALLEY. Bought for $140,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions Sales on the Gold Coast, Hedged has looked a star at the jump outs every time he has stepped out, winning his last four in fast time. Unfortunately though, after being well backed on his first outing at the races at Ballarat, he endured a tough run from a wide barrier and soon went shin sore thereafter, causing the stable to abort his first racing preparation. He managed to hang onto third placing as the even-money favourite, but trainer Mick Price says he knew the horse was capable of more. Hedged was gelded less than a month after his debut run, a decision that was mutual between both Price & Kent Jnr, and the Roll The Dice Racing Team who syndicate the horse. Since then, he’s had a few months in the paddock and has seemingly furnished into an exciting three-year-old prospect this spring, with Saturday’s acid test to determine just how far he has come. “I tried to keep him a colt”, Mick Price said. “But he was shin sore after he went to Ballarat, which is why if you’re a punter that you’ll get reasonably good odds about him on Saturday, because he’s had a run and he’s had a blemish.

“He didn’t run bad, but I wouldn’t be scared to have a punt on him because he’s improved out of sight since he’s been gelded, he’s grown.” Roll The Dice Director of Strategy Leigh Saville echoed the thoughts of Mick Price, and is hoping for a bold showing this Saturday. “He was certainly a bit of a raw colt back then, but he’s been gelded and hopefully we can see what he can do on the racetrack now.” Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr and the Roll The Dice Racing Team have already tasted two-year-old success in the past with another Capitalist speedster in Profiteer. Profiteer banked his owners $1.5 million in prizemoney on the track and started favourite in the 2021 Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes, before running 6th. He now stands at stud with Newgate Farm and his progeny will be on the market as early as 2024. While Hedged is yet to prove himself at that level just yet, there are some similarities between the pair, with sheer speed and power both their main asset. Both Price & Kent Jnr and Roll The Dice are very hopeful that Hedged will prove his longevity on the racetrack though and train on into his three-year-old season, with the racing year turning over this Tuesday, 1 August. “Hedged is out of Fastnet Rock mare. He’s a bit bigger and rangier, and we think he could get a strong 1200 (metres) and even 1400 in time and be better as a three-year-old, which obviously he’s coming into his three-year-old season shortly”, Saville added. Hedged drew barrier six of 12 on Wednesday morning after acceptances came out and will be ridden by Beau Mertens, who has done a lot of the work on him in his jump outs. One of his main competitors could be the Matt Laurie trained Archo Nacho, who looked superb in his gallop at The Valley on Tuesday morning.
