It’s the 103rd running of Australia’s Best Race, the Ladbrokes Cox Plate. What a fantastic field that’s assembled from all over the globe. Leading the charge is Hong Kong’s star Romantic Warrior. Last year’s winning jockey James McDonald takes the reins once again on Danny Shum’s top galloper. Champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien meanwhile returns to The Valley with the emerging Victoria Road. There’s plenty of class among the local contenders too. Alligator Blood for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott is going as well as ever. Gold Trip, luckless last year, is right in the mix again. Mr Brightside for Lindsay Park doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Chris Waller, no stranger to Ladbrokes Cox Plate success, has two leading chances with quality mare Fangirl and three-year-old Militarize. Duais meanwhile could provide Damien Oliver, our 2023 Kingston Town Greatness Award inductee, with a third W.S. Cox Plate victory in what will be his final ride in the race. Adding to the excitement is the inclusion of another Group 1, the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, on the card. New Zealand mare Imperatriz has a chance at history, aiming to complete The Valley Group 1 sprinting triple crown, having claimed the 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes in the Autumn, while she broke her own 1000m track record last start in the Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes. The crowd will be in fine voice for the traditional singing of ‘The Horses’, and it’s fantastic to have one of Australia’s most exciting singer-songwriters, James Johnston, performing at The Valley.
