DR SHEAHAN PLATE Today's race is a tribute to Dr. Gerald Sheahan, a distinguished Life Member of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. Dr. Sheahan exemplified a deep devotion to the world of racing and served as a beloved local medical practitioner in Brunswick for an impressive span of over 40 years. His impactful presence extended beyond his medical practice, as he was an integral part of the community and a familiar face at The Valley racetrack. Beyond his medical and racing commitments, Gerald showcased his versatile talents as a skilled sportsman, notably contributing his prowess to the Melbourne Football Club. Dr. Sheahan's contributions to racing also included his role as a breeder, with the notable achievement of nurturing the illustrious mare, Sandara. Throughout the 1950s, Sandara achieved remarkable victories, triumphing in esteemed races like the Wakeful Stakes and the Adrian Knox Stakes. In honour of Dr. Gerald Sheahan's enduring legacy, today's event is aptly named the "Dr. Sheahan Plate," symbolizing his lasting impact on both the racing community and the local area.
