It is the Club’s oldest race, first run in October 1883. Filly Castaway triumphed, taking out the ‘Moonee Ponds Cup’ as it was initially named before it was changed to the Moonee Valley Cup the following year. The race quickly established itself as a major drawcard for the community. It’s a race steeped in history, and for a long time stood as the jewel in the crown of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. Recent winners of the race include Americain (2011), Prince Of Penzance (2014), Who Shot The Barman (2017), Lunar Flare (2021), and Francesco Guardi (2022). In 2023, the Moonee Valley Gold Cup returned to its place under lights, taking centre stage on the Friday night of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival, with Cleveland winning with James McDonald aboard.
