Moonee Valley Racing Club respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to its Elders past, present and emerging. WELCOME TO LADBROKES FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FOR SPRING AT THE VALLEY. It’s a busy period of spring and summer racing, with five consecutive Friday night meetings coming up before two Saturday meetings to round out December. Tonight’s card features two heats of The Road to the Jericho, a true staying test over 3850m, and a lead-up to the Jericho Cup at Warrnambool on Sunday, 3rd December. This Jericho Cup was revived in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the original race won by Bill The Bastard, regarded as one of Australia’s greatest war horses. Our Cheering For Charity partner for this evening is Team Taylor Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2018 in loving memory of Taylor Henry, who passed away aged 13 from Myocarditis, raising awareness of the disease and funds to assist in research. It’s Heat 5 of the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge. Shirshov is still the one to catch from the opening night, with the Julien Welsh gelding having set a slick time of 54.64 for the 955m. It will be a terrific night of racing and entertainment and I look forward to seeing you again next Friday at The Valley. CHAIR ADAM LENNEN CHAIR’S WELCOME

Plate winning jockey at his Plumpton training facility. “He came from Kevin Myers, he’s a family friend from New Zealand. He wasn’t that good a jumper, and he just thought the Jericho Cup would be an ideal race for him,” Payne said. “Kevin Myers just loved the history of the race, so he was really keen to be a part of it.” The green, purple and baby blue silks of Botti already have a special place in history at Warrnambool, one of Victoria’s proudest racing towns. Patrick Payne’s champion jumper Zed Em won the 2019 Grand Annual at the ‘Bool, was placed in Botti has already secured his position in the 2023 Jericho Cup, scheduled for 3 December at Warrnambool, but will be using this Friday’s Road to Jericho at The Valley as his final preparation run before the $300,000 grand final in two weeks’ time. Not blessed with a wonderful jumping ability but a horse who can stay all day, Payne says the Jericho Cup is the perfect race for Botti again this year, lauding its continual growth since inception. Botti wasn’t officially under Payne’s name yet when he ran in the race last year on Australian debut but was immediately transferred thereafter to join the ex. the race on a further three occasions, and also won the other feature steeple during the May Carnival in 2017, the Brierly Steeplechase. “They’re very traditional (the people of Warrnambool). “They love horses and they especially love jumping horses.” Botti has run second in three Maiden Hurdles throughout his career, but with the jumps season now finished, all roads lead to the Jericho Cup. The son of Jakkalberry will be ridden by Chris McCarthy this Friday night at The Valley where he will shoulder the topweight of 70kg in the Road to Jericho Heat 2 – 3800m. The Jericho Cup itself is a stamina-sapping test over three miles, or 4650m, and Payne says it requires a certain horse to handle the undulating steeple course and the extended journey at Warrnambool. “Obviously they need the natural stamina. They need a good attitude and to be able to rest. “They have to be very genuine. They need to turn left and they turn right and it’s quite grueling, so I think he’s the ideal horse for the job.” “We all love the idea of the race, just to be a part of it. Just to be there on the day is fantastic, but if we could snag it, it’d just be unbelievable.”

How the race name for the Guaranteed Start races came to be ~ The Road to Jericho ~ Words by Bill Gibbins “ When we wanted to have a similar theme to all the guaranteed start races, ” The Road to Jericho” just seemed to say it all. Then one night I said to my wife, I reckon the Good Samaritan was on the road to Jericho, when he befriended the man who had been bashed, robbed and left to die by the roadside. Sure enough, after consulting Wikipedia, he was on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, a distance of some 22km. Jerusalem is some 3,000ft above sea level and believe it or not, Jericho is 800ft below sea level. The road winds down through the hills, with an abundance of places to ambush the unsuspecting traveler. I thought what better memento for our winners than to have a depiction of this scene. I commissioned out trusty resident artist Bill Wood to the task and the result is before you today. The original will be on permanent display in Warrnambool, and each Road to Jericho winner will receive a limited edition print. Good Luck to all of them on their own particular road to the Jericho Cup.” www.thejerichocup.com.au 3 DECEMBER 2023
