It is my pleasure to welcome you to Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights for our Lunar New Year meeting as we celebrate the Year of the Snake. The Moonee Valley Racing Club is proud to have partnered with the Australian Chinese Jockey Club over the past decade to deliver a vibrant and culturally rich event that adds something special to our summer racing calendar. I would also like to congratulate ACJC Chair Teresa Poon on her recent recognition as the Magic Millions Victoria Racing Woman of the Year—a well-deserved acknowledgment of her contributions to the racing industry. Tonight’s program includes a Lion Dance, Chinese Drummers, K-Pop performances, and a visit from The Funky Farm. It is accompanied by an exciting racing card headlined by the 888-metre sprint. JAMIE PI BACK TO THE VALLEY TO CALL THE ACJC 888 SPRINT Sports broadcaster and avid racing fan Jamie Pi will make his return to The Valley this Friday for Lunar New Year racing, where he will call the ACJC 888 Sprint run over the specialist distance of 888 metres, the lucky number of the Chinese community. Jamie has been calling on Lunar New Year night since 2017, after answering a Twitter post by the Club that explored an opportunity for a race caller to call a race in Mandarin on the night. “They put out an ad on Twitter 7 or 8 years ago looking for a mandarin caller, and I put my name down after a few people tagged me and suggested I had a look.” Pi told us. “I then went in and had a bit of an audition, I’m not sure how many people auditioned, but I was lucky enough to get the job. “It was a little bit daunting. I remember Alastair (Dwyer) just showed me a race, and I didn’t know the result, and he just said see how you go with that. I think he wanted to see the tempo and the gusto in my voice, and whether I was up to scratch. It all went well which was good.” Born in China, Pi made his move to Australia with his parents in 1993 as a thirteen-year-old and has been fully bilingual from the age of fifteen. His knowledge and experience in the Australian sports industry also stems from his teenage years, and he has since qualified to become an accredited AFL player agent. “I’ve had a lot to do with AFL and football, and the expansion of the game into the Chinese community. “It would have started in ’06 or ’07, and I was then involved in the first broadcast of an AFL game in China, where I called the 2010 clash between Brisbane and Melbourne in Mandarin. “I also called Rugby 7s in matches played all around the world. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to travel for that gig, and did all these matches remotely, but it worked in well with my study.” Pi will call the ACJC 888 Sprint on Friday night, scheduled as Race 5 on the program, and he explained to us his preference to call the saddle cloth numbers during the run, rather than the horse names themselves. “The horse names don’t really make much sense to the Chinese punters, which is the audience I’m speaking to when I’m calling. “The reasoning for that is the horse names aren’t translated. All your form guides and betting slips are still in English, so for me to just mumble through the English names really doesn’t give you much. “The Asian racing scene, a lot of importance is placed on the numbers. It’s also a little bit easier to rumble off as well, given it’s such a short race, and as they say, it’s all in the delivery.” All of Pi’s current commentary gigs are called in Mandarin, but he is also open to opportunities in English if they arise.

12 STEWARDS REPORT Race 1 Evergreen Turf Plate 1000M Mclovin Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the 600m was steadied. Held up rounding the home turn and for some distance approaching and passing the 100m raced in restricted room. When questioned rider reported that in hindsight on straightening he should have attempted to improve to the outside of Ilovediamonds, however at that stage he felt that runner was shifting out, and therefore he elected to steady inwards towards the rail. He added that although he raced in crowded room near the 100m, he did not feel his decision had any significant impact. SEYM 16/01/2025 Star Rapper Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Rider reported whilst the gelding is a four year old and having its first start, it is inexperienced and will derive benefit from today’s race. A post-race veterinary examination did not identify any significant abnormal findings. PAKM 17/01/2025 Wallaby Jack Overraced in the middle stages when the tempo slackened. WOD05/01/2025 Grouse Mountain Rider stated after becoming a little unbalanced rounding the home turn he was disappointed in its finishing effort.BDGO 29/08/2024 Queen Caves Bumped on jumping away. Raced keenly in the middle stages. A post-race vet exam revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor recovery rate. Tnr was told a vet clearance will be required prior to next race/trial. W FM 08/01/2025 Race 5 ACJC 888 Sprint 888M Speir Hampered at start. CRAN 18/01/2025 Baggage Handler When questioned, rider stated that his mount travelled well in the early stages, however, became under pressure passing the 600m and was overly disappointing in its finishing efforts. Rider further added that his mount did not feel comfortable in its action and may benefit from being fitted with a tongue tie. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery rate. Trainer was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding performing satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. Has since trialed on 2 occasions. COR 01/07/2024

Rdr reported mount continued to lay out and near the winning post shifted out further resulting in her having to stop and straighten. When qst re the improved performance, stb re std the only explanation he could provide was the filly had natural improvement being second up and also benefited being able to obtain a prominent position behind the leaders. KENS 22/01/2025 The Marg Factor Raced off the rail approaching and rounding the home turn. Rider reported she had been instructed to ride the mare in a forward position and in the early stages she was able to obtain the lead with little effort. Added she had been instructed by the stable to ride the mare away from the rail from the 600m as they believed this was the superior part of the track. Trainer confirmed the instructions.
