68 CARLYON STAKES This race honours one of the great Chairmen at Moonee Valley Racing Club, Norman Carlyon, with the running of the Sun Stud Carlyon Stakes. Norman was elected to the Committee of the Moonee Valley Racing Club in 1977. He served as Chairman from 1989 until his retirement in 1997. Under Norman’s leadership the Club reconstructed a new racetrack, initiated night racing, and aligned the Club with the World Racing Championship Series. Norman Carlyon’s vision is why the W S Cox Plate is internationally recognised today.
