William Reid was born in Morayshire, Scotland in 1823 and emigrated to Melbourne at the age of 20 where he became a banker. He became increasingly involved in racing, owning a number of prominent racehorses in the early 1900s. He joined the MVRC Committee in March 1917, continuing in this role until his passing in February 1923. The inaugural William Reid Stakes was run in January 1925 and won by Night Patrol. The race has been won by some great champions of the turf, including Manikato – who won five in a row from 1979 to 1983 – Black Caviar, Miss Andretti and Vo Rogue.
