The McEwen Stakes is a Group 2 race over 1000 metres for horses three years and older. Today’s McEwen Stakes honours the late Ian McEwen who served as Chief Executive of the Club from 1970 to 1991 and who passed away in 2007. The Club enjoyed spectacular development under his leadership, and we are eternally grateful for Ian’s contribution. Ian was responsible for many of the innovations that have made Moonee Valley the Club that it is today. Together with Chairman Bill Stutt in the 1970s, they elevated the W.S. Cox Plate to the weight-for-age championship of Australasia. McEwen Stakes
