CHAIRMAN’S Welcome The anticipation of and excitement of a momentous spring is well and truly building. Ladbrokes Cox Plate Qualifier Day is upon us as we get to see some key contenders in the Clamms Seafood Feehan Stakes battle it out for the only ballot-exempt pass into the 2022 Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Mr Brightside looks the horse to beat in front of notable challengers in Earlswood, Forgot You and Inspirational Girl. The winner will also be eyeing up a special $1 million bonus should they go on to win the $5m Ladbrokes Cox Plate. The Mitty’s McEwen Stakes over the flying 1000 metres features a quality field of seven sprinters, all with strong winning claims. Defending champion The Inferno makes his spring return, but has strong company in Away Game, Coolangatta, In The Congo, Rothfire, Semillion and Zoustyle. A $1m bonus awaits the horse that can complete the trifecta of winning the Mitty’s McEwen Stakes, a start in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, and a victory in Darley Champions Sprint at Flemington on the final day of Cup week. While you are trackside this Saturday, you will have the opportunity to see the grey flash Chautauqua up close, as the now showhorse leads the field around prior to race seven named in his honour. Racegoers will also be able to purchase a very special Centenary edition of the Cox Plate Carnival Charity Pin on Saturday from the Merch Stalls and the Make-A-Wish volunteers. Make-A-Wish Australia is a wonderful charity we are delighted to have partnered with for the next two years and all proceeds of the Pin will help make the wishes of sick children come true. Members may also wish to note that they will have an exclusive opportunity to have their photo taken with the 2022 Ladbrokes Cox Plate Trophy on Saturday in the Octagonal Lounge between races four and five. Moonee Valley Racing Club respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to its Elders past, present and emerging. Ride To Time is an educational program designed to train Pony Club riders on how to safely ride their horse at a given pace. Pony Club Victoria riders competed at numerous racecourses across the state including Cranbourne, Warrnambool, Yarra Glen, Geelong, Donald, Pakenham and Benalla with the aim of trialling as close to the optimum time as possible with the ultimate aim to qualify as one of 20 riders to compete at the State Championships at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Trials will be held prior to race 1 and will be followed by a presentation ceremony, with all riders. The presentation will be held between races 2 and 3 on the turf in front of the Winning Post. By Ben Caluzzi Warrnambool’s own Maddie Raymond has only been training for a matter of years and already she’s had in her stable the 2020/21 Country Racing Victoria Horse of the Year in Wentwood, Group 2 winner Turaath and now a live Ladbrokes Cox Plate hopeful in Earlswood. Owned by Glyn Davies and Jane Davies, who also own Wentwood, Earlswood heralded from Ireland and quickly made an impression down under, winning the Group 3 Carlyon Cup on debut and defeating 2021 Cox Plate contestant Callsign Mav and Melbourne Cup placegetter Spanish Mission. He was immediately outed after the race with shin soreness, but Raymond says the extended break could be a blessing in disguise. The imported son of Pivotal has had more time to acclimatise and strengthen for Spring, and given he was underdone in that victory at Caulfield, the sky is certainly the limit this season. “It was a tricky time back then with Covid. There wasn’t really any jump outs or trials to go so we sent him to the Carlyon basically as a trial,” Raymond said. “We wanted to see how he was going to stack up, so he was very impressive the way he went about it.” Earlswood is set for another acid test this weekend when he runs in RAYMOND’S EARLSWOOD READY FOR FEEHAN TEST

the Group 2 Clamms Seafood Feehan Stakes, a race that carries the only golden ticket into the 2022 Ladbrokes Cox Plate. While only a small field, he will face the likes of Group 1 winners Mr Brightside and Inspirational Girl, as well as Valley specialist Forgot You. Raymond brought Earlswood to The Valley last month for a gallop and his first look around the course, with rider Damian Lane giving a glowing report back to his trainer after dismounting. “He changed legs at the right times and got on the right legs around the corners. Obviously, Moonee Valley can be a tight, tricky track and he’s quite a big striding horse. “So, to have that bit of exposure being raceday with the crowd and a bit of music going on was great to see how he handled it. Damian couldn’t have been any more impressed. “It was only a quiet piece of work, but everything we’ve asked him to do, he’s done it, and he’s done it with ease.” After feeling the effects of a Good 3 track at Caulfield earlier this year, Earlswood should also appreciate the rain that has been around Melbourne this week with The Valley currently rated a Soft 6. The new season five-year-old won on a Soft 7 and Heavy 10 overseas and appears adept in all track conditions. Holding a Ladbrokes Cox Plate nomination, he will need to call on all his versatility to win and gain automatic entry into the race on October 22, but options are plenty for the entire as he also has entries for the other two spring majors this season. “The feedback from Ireland, and even Damian, when he came over was that they are confident he should be able to run two miles as well so the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup are certainly not off the cards. “But obviously being an entire, the Cox Plate is quite tempting to make a stud career for him down the track.” With a similar name and the same silks and ownership as country cups champ Wentwood, comparisons are always likely to be drawn between the pair, but Raymond says likening one to the other is unfair. “I could never work them together because he’d break Wentwood’s heart unfortunately. “But he’s been such a great honest horse for us, he taught me a lot about my training career, Wentwood. “He’s been a difficult horse to manage, and I’m privileged to have him in the stables and have him done what he’s done, but Earlswood definitely has a bit of x-factor about him.” Earlswood is currently the $3.90 second elect in Ladbrokes markets for the $500,000 Clamms Seafood Feehan Stakes and will be hoping to upset the favourite Mr Brightside and book his Cox Plate ticket.

Ride To Time is an educational program designed to train Pony Club riders on how to safely ride their horse at a given pace. Pony Club Victoria riders competed at numerous racecourses across the state including Cranbourne, Warrnambool, Yarra Glen, Geelong, Donald, Pakenham and Benalla with the aim of trialling as close to the optimum time as possible with the ultimate aim to qualify as one of 20 riders to compete at the State Championships at Moonee Valley Racecourse on September 3. The event has two sections Open and Maiden. Open riders complete 1000m in the optimum time of 109 seconds. Maiden riders complete 1000m in 120 seconds. The Ride To Time program provides riders with an opportunity to connect to the racing industry, learn track riding skills and have a go at something new and different. For the 20 lucky riders who compete at the State Championship event at Moonee Valley, the day provides them with an experience like no other and many riders will tell you it was their most memorable experience in their pony club journey. Pony Club Victoria would like to thank the 2022 Zone Ride To Time Coaches; Sharron Lowther, Misty-Jane Vlietman-Paris, Tracey Gorick, Kim Ward, Nicole Don, Donna Stebbins, Emily McDonald, Karen Martin and our State Coach Jo Martin for their dedication and commitment to the program. PRESENTATIONS A presentation ceremony with all riders will be held between races 2 and 3 on the turf in front of the winning post. WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW TO JOIN PONY CLUB?
