Champions By Andrew Lemon Kennedy Oaks

“It’s the horses, the champions and future champions, first and foremost that draw us each year to Flemington Racecourse. They are the reason for the celebration, the party, the fun and fashion, the crowds, the roses, lawns and the gardens.” Personal, ridden by seven-time VRC Oaks winning jockey Damien Oliver in the 2020 Kennedy Oaks. (Scott Barbour/Racing Photos)

S ome historical lists of winners of the VRC Oaks at Flemington date back only to 1861, the year of the first Melbourne Cup. The Victoria Derby validly traces its origins further to 1855, making it the oldest continuing classic race run in Australia, so on this basis the Oaks should actually date its beginnings to 1859. The winner Birdswing admittedly won in a onehorse race – the correct meaning of ‘a walkover’ – but she was a valid entry and she took home the prizemoney. Every year since then there has been an Oaks race for three-year-old fillies at Flemington, and mighty champions figure on the winning list. But it is fair to say that the VRC Oaks achieved proper status only in 1875 when Oaks Day was awarded its own feature Thursday in a revamped Melbourne Cup week. This was quickly tagged Ladies’ Day. The Oaks has often attracted small fields, but always furnished a quality winner. In that 1875 race in a field of three, the filly Maid of All Work, trained by James Wilson of St Albans Stud, Geelong, was the winner, ridden by his sixteen-year-old son William. Her daughter Royal Maid won the race six years later. Royal Maid is the only Oaks winner whose dam also won the Oaks. It’s a well-known Oaks fact that the late Bart Cummings holds the training record with nine winners, stretching from the 1965 Melbourne The David Hayes-trained, superstar filly Miss Finland, winning the 2006 VRC Oaks. (Kristian Dowling/Getty Images)

Cup winner Light Fingers (she won the Oaks in 1964) through to Faint Perfume in 2009. What has been forgotten is that Bart shares this record with the same James Wilson of St Albans. Wilson’s Oaks winners were My Dream (1868) who also won a Victoria Derby; Sunshine (1872), and then in successive years from 1875 to 1879 Maid of All Work, Briseis, Pardon, Melita and Petrea. Royal Maid’s win was in 1881. The last of the nine, sometimes wrongly attributed to the trainer’s son, was Nitre in 1899. Briseis, as is widely recognised, was an exceptional filly who that week also won the Derby and the Cup, a unique treble. Twenty years later the South Australian Auraria came close to repeating the feat: third in the Derby before winning the Cup and the Oaks. It is hard to single out the best of the rest. Frances Tressaday (1923) has to be one of them, the last filly to win the Victoria Derby, after Furious did the same in 1921. Carlita (1914), Wilari (1911) and Lady Wallace (1905) all won that double. Evening Peal (1955), like Light Fingers, won her Melbourne Cup a year later. Chicquita (1949) was South Australian-filly, Auraria, finished 3rd in the VRC Derby and won the Melbourne Cup before going on to win the 1895 VRC Oaks. (VRC Collection)

a champion and crowd favourite who ran second in the 1950 Melbourne Cup. Amarco (1957) became the dam of champion Tobin Bronze. In recent decades we have been spoiled with VRC Oaks champions including the half sisters Spirit Of Kingston and Rose Of Kingston, along with Surround, Research, Miss Finland and Jameka. Because it has always been Ladies’ Day, the Oaks as a race has happily shared the day with fashion, especially women’s fashion, at its best. At first, in fact for years, this was often treated with delight but sometimes with a whiff of male condescension. As in the 1870s: ‘One of the great features of the Spring Meeting is the lawn and its occupants, the ladies, who in a great measure contribute to the success of the November reunion. Without those beautiful butterflies that flutter about the promenade, Flemington would indeed be dull.’

Clare Lindop became the fiurst woman to ride Victoria Derby winner in 2008 on South Australian outsider, Rebel Raider (Slattery) Damien Oliver after winning his fourth VRC Oaks aboard Jameka. (Racing Photos) Since the advent of the original Fashions on the Field promotions sixty years ago, the milliners, the dressmakers and the people who elegantly wear the clothes have become an intrinsic part of this day of champions. For the past thirty years the Victoria Racing Club has proudly hosted – through Melbourne Cup Week, the Oaks Club Luncheon and Oaks Day itself – the biggest names in the business including Zandra Rhodes, Frederick Fox, Renato Balestra, Perri Cutten, Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy. The emergence of champion women trainers and jockeys has added another modern element to the evolution of Ladies’ Day into Kennedy Oaks Day as we know it today. While still awaiting the first woman to ride a VRC Oaks winner, we celebrated Gai Waterhouse becoming the first to train an Oaks winner, with Pinot in 2017.

EQUINE WELFARE AMANDA FINDS HER ROMEO BY SARAH MARINOS Olympic eventing rider and VRC ambassador Amanda Ross is using her extensive experience with Off The Track thoroughbreds to train another potential show jumping champion. During her long career in equestrian, Amanda Ross has successfully worked and competed with a series of Off The Track (OTT) thoroughbreds. In 2000, she rode Otto Schumaker at the Sydney Olympics, a thoroughbred who trialled but never made it to the races. Amanda continued her success with Koko Popping Candy (who raced as Gothic Medusa). In 2020, Amanda and Koko Popping Candy won four Equestrian Victoria awards including Eventing Horse of the Year, Rider of the Year and Off-The-Track Dressage and Eventing Horse of the Year. Koko Popping Candy recently retired from competition (and is expecting her first foal in February 2023), and Amanda has now been working with a new OTT horse. She has high hopes for the new four-legged love in her life – a six-year-old dapple grey called Romeo. “Two of my clients were riding at Balnarring Beach in Victoria one morning and spotted him. He was so beautiful that he caught their eye and they told me about this grey thoroughbred. As soon as they mentioned the name on the horse’s saddlecloth – Yargi – I knew who the horse belonged to,” Ross said. Romeo, who raced as Switching To Win, was trained by husbandand-wife trainers Amy Johnston and Ash Yargi. Ross has known Johnston for years so immediately called her to find out more about the mysterious grey horse. “I rang Amy and said, ‘apparently, you’ve got a really nice grey’ and she instantly knew which horse I was talking about. She said he’s not finished racing yet but he’s well-bred with a great temperament. She asked if I was interested when he retired from racing and I said yes. In late January, Amy called me and said he was available,” Ross said.

It was love at first sight for Ross. She instantly recognised Romeo’s quality and potential. “He’s by Frankel, and I’ve since learned he was originally purchased as a Melbourne Cup prospect. Romeo is a leggy, English staying type. He’s got a well set-on neck, a nice compact back and wellshaped feet – and he’s very pretty. Being dapple grey is always a head turner! He’s a nice mover and he has a trainable temperament – he’s the complete package,” Ross said. Since arriving at her Mornington property in early February, Romeo made himself at home. Ross gradually eased him into a routine and helped him become familiar with his new home and different job.

EQUINE WELFARE “He’s great to handle, which is one of the benefits of buying a horse off the track – they’ve seen a lot, been in floats and trucks, been stabled and in a busy environment. “I really took my time with Romeo initially. He had done some basic dressage schooling, so I introduced more groundwork, lunging, basic polework and hacking out. I took him on outings with the other horses, where initially, he just had to stand in a yard, eat hay, and chill out in new surroundings. On his first hack out, I found out Romeo was a bit scared going under branches – he crouched down going under anything remotely low!” Romeo has proven to be a very good jumper, and embodies the qualities essential for success in showjumping – a good balanced canter, a careful, watchful, jumping technique and bravery. So soon after ending his racing career, Romeo still retains the urge to go fast now and again. When Ross first took him to Boneo Park Equestrian Centre, he couldn’t help but get a little excited when he heard the thud of hooves on the sand in the show jumping arena and the noise from the PA system. “He thought he was back at the races and all of a sudden, he was on high alert. He was waiting for the race to start and couldn’t figure out why all the other horses were going in different directions and weren’t getting organised in a straight line, ready to run fast. He was a bit bemused!” laughed Ross. Initially beginning in the 45cm class, Romeo has progressed to 95cm classes with ease, which is very pleasing for Ross, who has transitioned out of eventing and into show jumping. One of her remaining equestrian dreams is to compete for Australia in showjumping at the Olympics and World Championships. “Since I transitioned out of eventing, I have competed at World Cup level, and it’s exciting to be jumping at that elite level. I’ve evented all my life and I got to a stage where I wanted a new challenge,” she said.

In the near future, Ross plans to enter Romeo in the Off The Track jumping and dressage events. Although Ross is concentrating on Romeo as a show jumper, she feels that the dressage training is so important for the horse’s education and will improve his ability as a jumper. “Often the biggest challenge is getting OTT thoroughbreds to relax, which correct dressage training works wonders for. Once the tension is released, they show their true talent,” Ross said. “Romeo moves well enough to do dressage and he also seems to enjoy jumping – I think he can be a jack of all trades and I will see where his talent lies and let him tell me what he wants to do. He has a good temperament, he’s a great fit for me and he is showing a lot of promise.” “He’s great to handle, which is one of the benefits of buying a horse off the track – they’ve seen a lot, been in floats and trucks, been stabled and in a busy environment.”

HISTORY OF THE OAKS First contested in 1861 – the same year as the inaugural Lexus Melbourne Cup – the Kennedy Oaks allows the three-year-old fillies to shine over the classic distance of 2500m. While the race is renowned for potentially throwing up eventual Lexus Melbourne Cup contenders, including two future Cup winners in Evening Peal and Light Fingers, two fillies – Briseis in 1876 and Auraria in 1895 – actually won the VRC Oaks after their Melbourne Cup win two days earlier. It is a race that pits fillies that were star two-year-olds against those who have taken more time, reaching their peak with maturity and distance. Juvenile Group 1 winners like Miss Finland, Samantha Miss and Slight Chance and leading twoyear-olds like Jameka, Mosheen and Dear Demi are joined on the Oaks honour roll by later developers like Miami Bound and her dam Arapaho Miss as well as recent winners like Brazilian Pulse and Faint Perfume. Last year saw the James Cummings-trained Willowy complete the Racing and Sports Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and the Kennedy Oaks double, giving jockey Damien Oliver a record seventh Oaks success. 2021 KENNEDY OAKS WINNER WILLOWY KENNEDY OAKS Brett Holburt/Racing Photos
