1 Welcome to Flemington for Penfolds Victoria Derby Day. And welcome to a magical week of racing. The enchantment of Penfolds Victoria Derby Day takes many forms. The curtain rises on the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival. The fashion is elegant. The turf is green, the roses are blooming, the horses are ready to show their best. Derby Day offers a brilliant program, with every race at the prestigious Group level. At Group 3, we have the Carbine Club Stakes for three-year-olds—a race that in the past has unearthed such champions as Emancipation and Saintly. The Rising Fast Stakes commemorates the only racehorse to have ever won the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup treble. The Furphy Sprint is for our sharpest speedsters. And the Lexus Archer Stakes is keenly anticipated as a last chance for stayers to win a place in next Tuesday’s Lexus Melbourne Cup. The Group 2 Wakeful Stakes honours one of the greatest mares in Australian racing history. It is an acknowledged steppingstone for the best staying fillies towards next Thursday’s Kennedy Oaks. Our Group 1 events feature the Coolmore Stud Stakes up the famous 1200 metre Straight Six course, the TAB Empire Rose Stakes for mares, and of course the Penfolds Victoria Derby itself. Today’s racing also features ‘The Damien Oliver’. The Victoria Racing Club salutes one of our all-time champion Flemington jockeys. After winning more than 2800 races in Australia and 129 at Group 1 level including three Melbourne Cups—Damien foreshadows his retirement from riding at the close of this calendar year. This will be his final spring at Flemington. Penfolds Victoria Derby Day is special for Damien. He starts today with an astonishing seven victories to his name in this classic, just one short of Bobbie Lewis’ all-time record. CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Neil Wilson Chairman

14 Magic VRC DERBY DAY Changed your mind and missed the winner of the Derby? You must be a drongo! Is that great piece of Aussie slang falling into disuse – like drop kick and flamin’ galah? The drongo who turned the name into a sometimes affectionate insult was a racehorse a century ago. As a thoroughbred, he was far superior to most but he never quite made it to the top. Magic sometimes works that way. Usually the result is happier. Last year a colt sired by the French Derby winner Almanzor magically transformed the lives of the Flannery family from Queensland. Manzoice was the third horse they had ever raced, and at just his sixth start he won the 2022 Penfolds Victoria Derby. Derby Day does that. It creates magic. If you can explain magic without spoiling the mystery, it has something to do with time travel. The past – here, 168 years of tradition at Flemington – intersects with today. A new Victoria Derby winner will appear. Many champions immortalised in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame first achieved recognition through the Victoria Derby. Eighteen winners went on to take a Melbourne Cup, the most recent Efficient who won the 2006 Derby and the 2007 Cup. The most famous was Phar Lap. An additional eighteen Derby winners became subsequent Cup placegetters. The roll call of champion Victoria Derby winners extends far beyond these. Tulloch, for a start, Tobin Bronze and Sailor’s Guide; in more recent times, Dulcify, Taj Rossi and Daryl’s Joy, Mahogany and Red Anchor. The sprinting champion, Sky High, won the 1960 Derby. Slip back further into Australian racing last century, between the two world wars. Whittier and Manfred are there. So too is Frances Tressady – the last filly to have won the Victoria Derby against the colts and geldings, exactly one hundred years ago. Inadvertently, she helped make the runner-up, Drongo, a household name. The Filly and the Drongo By Andrew Lemon

Like the Flannery family with Manzoice, the owner of Frances Tressady was new to this side of the sport. Alex Barlow raced as ‘Mr A.G. Vauxhaull’. He bought the filly cheaply enough at the Sydney yearling sales in 1922. He entrusted her to Sydney jockey Billy Foulsham, embarking on his training career. Frances Tressady was foaled in New South Wales. Her mother was a fourth-generation descendant of 1877 Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup winner, Chester. With a sustained run home, ridden brilliantly by champion jockey Frank Dempsey, Frances Tressady held off a late challenge. To add to her story, the filly saddled up again three days later and finished a good fifth in the Melbourne Cup – and then won the VRC Oaks, as odd-on favourite, on the Thursday. 16 Derby Day Magic As for poor old Drongo, although bred in the purple and competing throughout his career only in the highest class events, he had a run of near misses that few have matched. In 37 career starts – all on city tracks, including the Derby and two St Legers – Drongo finished second five times, with seven thirds. He never won a race. 17 Derby Day Magic Sporting journalist Bruce Walkley has written a whole, affectionate book about Drongo, giving the definitive account of how the horse got his name. The original reference was not unkind. The drongo shrike bird is found in the north and east of the continent. It has glossy black plumage with iridescent blue-green spangles, a long forked tail and blood red eyes. It is of the genus Lanius – the name of the sire of thoroughbred Drongo. At his final two career starts, in 1925, Drongo finished fourth in the Adelaide Cup and then second in a classy handicap at Adelaide’s Victoria Park – beaten a neck. Sam Wells, cartoonist with the Melbourne Herald, was one of the first to lampoon the horse who could never win. The name made its way into Australian vernacular. A slow footballer in 1934 was ‘a drongo’. The expression morphed into ‘a bit of a dill’, and worse. By 1940, a poem in Air Force News described a hapless airman: ‘He was just a —— drongo, although he did his best. He was just a drongo, a bit behind the rest.’ Bobbie Lewis had ridden seven Victoria Derby winners before he rode Drongo in the 1923 race. Afterwards he described him as the unluckiest Derby colt ever beaten. 100 TO WON: 100-1 outsider Rebel Raider gave Clare Lindop her first Group 1 win, becoming the first female to win the Derby in its 150-plus year history. 18 Ollie THANK YOU, By Patrick Bartley

19 After decades in the racing world, Damien Oliver found himself retracing the familiar route to Byford, Western Australia, in August this year, a journey etched in his memory. This marked a significant moment in the illustrious career of arguably Australia’s greatest jockey – a return to where it all began. When Oliver visited Byford with the prestigious Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy as part of the VRC’s Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour in an unannounced visit to his old primary school, the jockey was greeted by 300 excited students. They listened intently as the champion jockey shared anecdotes from his school days and his early steps into the world of work. And why wouldn’t they, when they are graced by the presence of one of the most successful jockeys in Australian history? Jody Harrington, the headmaster of Byford Primary, recalled Oliver’s inspiring message to the students: “Damien told the students that you can achieve anything you want in life, believe in yourself, and trust in your abilities.” Harrington and her staff were impressed by how the older students connected with Oliver, showing a genuine curiosity about his life since leaving school and becoming one of the college’s most celebrated alumni. Earlier this year, Oliver announced his retirement at the age of 51, capping a remarkable 35 years in the saddle, and three Melbourne Cup victories. This all came from hard work and talent, but a chance meeting with trainer Anthony Freedman early in his career at a local yearling sale in Perth was a pivotal moment. Over coffee, they forged a partnership that would become one of racing’s most successful collaborations. 20 “I spoke to Anthony and mentioned my progress in my first year of riding. They had a connection to me through my brother Jason, so it was decided that I would come to Melbourne,” Oliver recounted. The Freedman brothers, known for their racing prowess, saw potential in Oliver that could complement their team. “I was performing well back in Perth, and having a 2.5-kilogram allowance for the Freedmans gave me a strong advantage as I climbed the ranks. It was a challenging time, being homesick and moving to the other side of the country at just 16, but the Freedmans were tough and hard working. It was a time when everything fell into place, and I was fortunate to be part of their success,” Oliver reflected. Oliver’s career has been nothing short of spectacular, with 129 Group 1 victories, which far surpasses his rivals. He’s claimed 11 Scobie Breasley Medals, an award recognising the most accomplished rider of each season. His early years as an apprentice were equally impressive, as Richard Freedman noted. FOR JASON: Ollie salutes the heavens aboard Irish galloper Media Puzzle in the 2002 Melbourne Cup. (Chris McGrath/Getty Images) Farewell Ollie

21 “People underestimate what a superstar he was as an apprentice. If you ask who the most successful apprentice rider in Australian racing history is, you get names like Malcolm Johnston, Des Lake, and Darren Gauci. But while Gauci had three Group wins as an apprentice and Des Lake had nine, Damien Oliver had 18. He was truly remarkable, perhaps the greatest apprentice in Australia and possibly the world.” Oliver, however, is quick to also attribute his success to his family, friends, and management rather than taking sole credit. He acknowledged that the decision to retire after more than three decades wasn’t easy, but felt like the right time. “I’ve sacrificed and gone without sleep for a long time, and now it’s time for a new chapter in my life. My family is so important to me and my retirement means that I can do a few more school functions and weekends off,” Oliver explained. One of his key team members is his longtime manager, Mark Van Triet, who took over in July 2006 and witnessed the highs and lows of Oliver’s career. Farewell Ollie

22 Farewell Ollie “What stands out the most is how driven and mentally strong he is. Lee Freedman once said he’s like kryptonite that can’t be broken. One example was when he had a fall at The Valley on a Friday night. I thought there was no way he’d ride the next day at Flemington, but after being cleared and discharged in the early hours of Saturday morning, he not only rode, but won the first race!” Tragedy struck during Oliver in 2002 when his older brother, Jason, was killed in a race fall in Western Australia. While the racing world mourned, Oliver managed to mentally compartmentalise his grief to win the Melbourne Cup shortly after the accident. “I’ve thought about this a lot. I was younger and without a family when I lost Jason, and I don’t think the true impact of grief hit me as it would today. I have a family now, and they mean everything to me. If something were to happen to them, I would be devastated,” he revealed. As Oliver steps away from the limelight, he leaves behind an impressive legacy in Australian racing, from dominating two-year-old races to clinching the Melbourne Cup three times. His family will now take centre stage in his life, along with new challenges. Yet, Oliver’s enduring message is that you can achieve anything if you desire it strongly enough, a sentiment echoed by Richard Freedman, who said, “To have been a three-time leading jockey as an 18-year-old and to have ridden 18 Group 1 winners … it’s hard to fathom how exceptional he was.” (Left) SEVENTH HEAVEN: Ollie joins legend Bobbie Lewis on seven VRC Oaks wins after he guided Willowy home in the 2019 edition of Australia’s first fillies classic. 31 HISTORY OF THE DERBY The Penfolds Victoria Derby is the oldest race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival having been first run in 1855, six years before the inaugural Lexus Melbourne Cup. The Penfolds Victoria Derby is a blue riband event over 2500m which determines the most promising stayer in Australia. Won by some of the greats of the turf including Briseis, Grand Flaneur, Poseidon, Manfred, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze, Dulcify and Mahogany, among its more recent winners are Lexus Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and runner-up Nothin’ Leica Dane, globetrotting star Elvstroem and prolific stallions Blackfriars, Rebel Raider and Tarzino. It has also been a Lexus Melbourne Cup lead-up at times, with Arena (in 1998) the most recent winner to back up in the race that stops a nation™. The previous horse to complete the double was Skipton in 1941. Last year, Chris Waller had his second success in Australia’s oldest classic with Manzoice producing a late finishing burst to defeat race favourite, Sharp ’N’ Smart.
