1 Welcome to Kennedy Oaks Day at Flemington. Ladies’ Day at Flemington, with the Kennedy Oaks as its centrepiece, has been taking on new dimensions in recent years, with an increasing number of women joining the ranks of successful owners, trainers, jockeys and administrators in Australian racing. In thoroughbred racing, the best fillies have always been able to compete against the best of their male equivalents, with many of the greatest equine champions in open competition being our mares. Winx, Black Caviar and Makybe Diva have been our most popular horses in recent years. Kennedy Oaks Day is now the Victoria Racing Club’s showcase for the best fillies and mares in the land. The Oaks is our classic staying test for three- year-old fillies over 2500 metres, and has produced many champions. A new one will be found today. Prominent on the program are the Darley Ottawa Stakes, the Network 10 Red Roses Stakes, the Off The Track Desirable Stakes (named after a superstar sprinting filly), the Inglis Bracelet and the TCL TV Stakes. All of these races, under varying distances and conditions, are exclusively for fillies or mares. Kennedy Oaks Day also features the eagerly anticipated Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of everyone involved in country racing in Victoria for helping to allow racing to continue and flourish during extended periods of community lockdown this year and last. Ladies’ Day is always the day where the fashion is highlighted at Flemington. The VRC is delighted at the prospect of welcoming even a limited number of racegoers for Kennedy Oaks Day 2021, after no crowds being allowed at Flemington for Oaks Day last year. We know that throughout the nation fine dressing is in vogue for the millions who will be joining us remotely around Australia.
