First run by the Victoria Turf Club at Flemington, the race is older than the Melbourne Cup. The rival Victoria Jockey Club took over the race in 1858. It honoured Britain’s St Leger, the world’s oldest 3YO classic (2921m). The local clubs re-formed into the VRC in 1864. Thirteen VRC St Leger winners including Phar Lap have gone on to win the Melbourne Cup. The race moved to ANZAC Day in 1993.
