FROM COUNTRY ROOTS TO BY CELIA PURDEY global glory

ASFOORA’S ROYAL ASCOT RETURN In June 2024, a mare bred in Victoria’s north-east and trained in Ballarat delivered one of Australian racing’s proudest moments: a Group 1 win on Day 1 of Royal Ascot. Claiming the King Charles III Stakes, Asfoora became just the sixth Australian-trained horse to win the race. But behind that moment of glory was a story that started far from the spotlight and was deeply connected to country Victoria. Asfoora was born and raised on Noor Elaine Farm, a family-run breeding operation in Euroa. Her dam, Golden Child, was a lightly raced daughter of I Am Invincible who never won a race. Noor Elaine picked her up for just $11,000 at the 2016 Inglis December Thoroughbred Sale. When she was sent to Flying Artie in his first season at stud, the resulting filly was presented at the 2020 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale. But with bidding stalling at $24,000 – below her reserve – she was taken home. Her breeder, Akram El-Fahkri, decided to race her himself after she failed to meet her reserve at auction. With no big-name buyers lining up, Ballarat-based trainer Henry Dwyer stepped in. El-Fahkri convinced Dwyer, who had a reputation for his hands-on approach and giving horses a chance, to take on Asfoora. Dwyer’s stable, which blends country practicality with ambition, was the perfect launchpad. It was a decision that would ultimately take them from Victoria’s paddocks to the royal lawns of Ascot. She won her debut at a maiden at Colac in 2021 comfortably. Then she backed up at Geelong and won again. She then tried her luck in town at Caulfield and made it three from three. The filly no one had wanted was now an unbeaten city winner. Over the next year, she continued to rise through the grades, notching up blacktype wins with her speed and turn of foot. By the time she lined up in the Group 1 ABOVE: Oisin Murphy guides Asfoora to victory in the 2024 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot. 8 ASFOORA’S ROYAL ASCOT RETURN Moir Stakes against Imperatriz at Moonee Valley, she was no longer just a surprise winner – she was a serious sprinting talent. Dwyer saw her potential early, calling her “a top-level sprinter” in September 2023, well before her placing in the Moir Stakes. But it was clear that she might need to travel to win at the top. So the team made a bold decision: they set their sights on Royal Ascot. Asfoora’s European campaign was built on instinct, ambition, and courage. Taking her overseas fell to strapper Chenelle Ellis, who had never left Australia. She didn’t even have a passport when Dwyer suggested the idea. But the trainer trusted her. “Chenelle is diligent and intuitive,” he said. “I knew if anyone could take that horse overseas unassisted, it was her.” Ellis took on everything: the travel, the training, the routines, the care. She spent over four months in the UK, based at Amy Murphy’s Newmarket stable, looking after just one horse. “Normally I have eight in my care,” she said. “So being able to focus all my attention on just Asfoora was actually a real luxury. I had time to make everything perfect.” Asfoora ran once before Ascot, in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock, where she finished sixth. It wasn’t the debut they’d hoped for, but the mare pulled up well. And on race day at Ascot, she was ready to go. “The day is a blur. Everyone saw the win, but I’d been there every morning and every afternoon for two months,” Ellis said. “She means the world to me. I’m so grateful to Henry and the owners for letting me go. To be there from the moment she landed to that day – it made me really proud.” Asfoora got some straight track practice at Flemington before her trip to the UK. (Vince Caligiuri/Getty Images)

ASFOORA’S ROYAL ASCOT RETURN Chenelle gives Asfoora a hose down after her jump out. (Vince Caligiuri/Getty Images) Ellis was visibly emotional in the aftermath, and the photos of her in tears next to her champion mare went around the world. Later, still dazed, she was asked to meet King Charles. “I didn’t know what to do – I think I curtsied!” she laughed. “But he was lovely. It was just such a special day.” For Dwyer, the win brought a sense of relief and validation. “After her first-up run at Haydock didn’t go well, there were doubts,” he admitted. “So seeing her cross the line first was more relief than anything else.” His own encounter with King Charles III was also memorable. “I’m not a monarchist by any stretch, but we had a good chat before and after the race,” Dwyer said. This year, Asfoora returns to Royal Ascot with a slightly different campaign. Due to a later arrival, she won’t have a lead-up win but will head into the race fresh, thanks to a short break in the paddock before one trial at Flemington. She might not have come from million-dollar bloodlines or city stables, but the filly from Euroa and Ballarat has made it all the way to the royal enclosure. And as she lines up again in 2025, it’s worth remembering: the greatest stories in racing often start far from the spotlight. She means the world to me. I’m so grateful to Henry and the owners for letting me go. To be there from the moment she landed to that day – it made me really proud. Chenelle Ellis - Asfoora’s strapper ” “

His record speaks for itself: hundreds of winners, decades at the top, and a reputation built on quiet commitment. This year, Eric Musgrove is the recipient of the Country Achiever Award. The Australian Trainers’ Association presents the 2025 Country Achiever Award in partnership with Country Racing Victoria and the VRC. It’s a recognition of excellence, integrity and long-standing service to country racing – both on and off the track. Trainer Eric Musgrove has become almost synonymous with jumps racing in Australia. His record is staggering: more than 700 winners over hurdles and fences, more than any other trainer in the country. He’s won the Von Doussa Steeplechase at Oakbank 13 times, trained multiple Grand Annual winners, and developed generations of consistent horses who’ve delivered time and again at tracks across the country. However, the statistics only tell part of the story. Musgrove is a horseman in the truest sense – someone who lives and works with animals, listens closely to their quirks and rhythms, and, after all these years, still finds joy in the most minor signs of progress. He’s trained champions, but has also guided dozens of young trainers and jockeys, supported countless country clubs, and maintained his faith in a code of racing that he loves. “For me, it’s always been about personal satisfaction. I’ve had good horses, good owners, and a great team around me. That makes all the difference.” Musgrove’s love of horses runs deep, even though he didn’t come from a racing family. As a boy, he would go to great lengths just to get a ride. “I wasn’t from a horsey background, but from the time I was a kid, I was always drawn to them,” he said. 2025 COUNTRY ACHIEVER AWARD Eric Musgrove BY CELIA PURDEY

2025 COUNTRY ACHIEVER AWARD That passion led to a highly successful showjumping career, both in Australia and overseas. When Musgrove and his young family eventually settled in Victoria, the connections he’d made through showjumping opened the door to racing. He began breaking in and pre-training for major stables – including Lloyd Williams – before obtaining his licence in 1981. “I always wanted to train,” he said. “But I didn’t have the money to set up properly at first. You need infrastructure – stables, tracks, a property. While I had a good set-up for showjumpers, it wasn’t suited to racehorses. So, I started breaking in horses and really enjoyed it. From there, it was a natural progression into training.” ABOVE: Eric with Jason Benbow after winning the 2018 Coleraine Cup with import Noumea. (Reg Ryan/Racing Photos) OPPOSITE: Eric after claiming the 2023 Australian Hurdle with Circle The Sun. (George Sal/Racing Photos) I’d walk half a mile just to get a ride on a pony. I joined the pony club and hung around horses constantly. I wasn’t much interested in school – I’d sit in class and draw horses instead of paying attention. It was always a passion, almost an obsession. “ ”

2025 COUNTRY ACHIEVER AWARD Among the horses he helped pre-train early on were Revenue, who won the Victoria Derby and placed in the AJC Derby, and What A Nuisance, who would go on to win the 1985 Melbourne Cup. Initially, he trained flat horses who had some success, but over time, Musgrove found his true niche in the jumping ranks. The horse who changed everything, though, was Karasi. A son of Kahyasi, Karasi had been a tough, consistent stayer on the flat, running fourth in the 2001 Melbourne Cup for David Hall. When Hall moved to Hong Kong, he suggested Musgrove might take the horse on. Karasi became a legend, winning the Nakayama Grand Jump three years in a row from 2005 to 2007 – at the time, the richest jumps race in the world. He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2018 and lived out his retirement at Musgrove’s property, Karasi Park, until his death last year at 30. Brett Scott, who partnered Karasi in all three Nakayama Grand Jump triumphs, reunited with the then 24-year-old champion to parade before the running of the 2019 Mosstrooper Steeplechase at Pakenham. (Brett Holburt/ Racing Photos) I remember David (Hall) saying, ‘He’s small, not sure how he’ll jump, but he can stay.’ I went to have a look, brought him home – and the rest is history. Musgrove on receiving his star jumper Karasi ” “

2025 COUNTRY ACHIEVER AWARD “Financially, he changed my life,” Musgrove said. “But more than that, he was a pleasure to have around. He was honest as the day is long and a real character. He was just a tough, honest, lovely horse.” Karasi Park – named in his honour – is where Musgrove still works from today. Set on 88 hectares at Coronet Bay, it’s a property Musgrove built from scratch. “All the tracks were excavated – we’ve put in pools, dams, drainage. It’s designed to make life easy. Not overly labour-intensive. Everything’s built to save time and effort, to work well and be good for the horses.” The property features 50 boxes, a 10-horse walker, a 120-metre pool, and paddocks that stretch to the beach. Musgrove currently works a small team of 11. “I consider myself very lucky – I’ve got a good way of life and I really enjoy what I do. If you can earn a living doing something you love, you’re very fortunate.” While records and wins have marked Musgrove’s long career, what keeps him in the sport is simpler: the horses and the process. “It’s very satisfying seeing them in their progression. It’s like children. It starts a certain way, and as they learn and develop and improve, it’s very satisfying. They are creatures of habit. They like routine, and they are sort of like companions.” In that light, the Country Achiever Award feels less like a milestone and more like an acknowledgement of a life quietly devoted to horses – particularly in the regions Musgrove values most. “I’m humbled to be the 2025 Country Achiever. We’ve raced a lot in the country over the years. There are a lot of great committees and a lot of great country clubs. A lot of country people really support racing, and you wouldn’t have your city races if you didn’t have your country races because the country has been the nursery for town for generations. You definitely need country racing. It’s strong. So many horses can win a race at Moe or Wangaratta or Warrnambool or Geelong and then come to town and win at their next start. The country means a lot to the industry, and it’s a great honour for me.” The Country Achiever Award will be presented at Flemington on VRC Country Race Day in a ceremony held in the Committee Room, and a race will be also named in his honour. It’s a thrill, a recognition of long-term achievements. I’ve had a few runners at Flemington and some good days, but this is very special. I’m very humbled. “ ”

Established by the Victoria Racing Club in 2009, the Winter Race Series brings together races like the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m), which had been run since 1979, and a number of other finals for horses young and established, both sprinters and stayers. To qualify for Flemington Finals Race Day on Saturday 5 July, which offers over $1.5 million in prizemoney, horses must earn their way into the finals by competing in heats right across Victoria. Horses that finish First and Second in nominated heats will be exempt from the ballot in the respective final. Who will be the next star to emerge? WINTER RACE SERIES

CRESWICK SPRINT SERIES This series is aimed at three-year-old sprinters, with heats over distances between 1000m-1200m, conducted at Flemington and Caulfield. It is named in honour of Sir Alexander (Alec) Reid Creswick (1912–83), who was a member of the VRC Committee for 24 years, from 1959 until his death in 1983, serving as Chairman 1969–77. His great-great-grandfather Henry Creswick had been a foundation committee member of the Victoria Racing Club in 1864. Sir Alec was a fine horseman himself—Master of the Melbourne Hunt Club, a leading polo player, head of the Equestrian Federation of Australia and a practical supporter of successful Australian participation in successive Olympic Games. He bred and raced many fine racehorses, including champion filly True Course. The final, the $177,035 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes, is run on Flemington Finals Race Day over 1200 metres. SANTA ANA LANE SPRINT SERIES Formerly the All-Victorian Sprint Series, the series was renamed in honour of five-time Group 1 winning sprinter, Santa Ana Lane, trained by Anthony Freedman. Santa Ana Lane amassed more than $8 million in prizemoney, winning Group 1 races in NSW, SA, QLD and the VRC Sprint Classic here at Flemington. Santa Ana Lane was retired a happy and healthy eight-yearold and now resides at Living Legends, located at Oaklands Junction. This series attracts the fastest winter sprinters and features heats up the famous Flemington straight, as well as heats at Caulfield, Sandown and Swan Hill, before culminating in the $177,335 Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final. TAJ ROSSI SERIES This series targets later-developing two-year-olds who are suited to the longer distance of 1600m of the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final and is named after Taj Rossi, the outstanding performer trained by the legendary Bart Cummings. When the son of Matrice was bought by Cummings in 1972 at the Adelaide Yearling Sales for $18,000 (top price) and then sold to prominent owner Victor Peters, neither could envisage the heights to which Taj Rossi would rise in his short but spectacular career. Beginning his racing as a two-year-old in Adelaide, his first two wins came in moderate company in the winter of 1973 at Flemington. In the spring he ran second at Moonee Valley. Then followed a dazzling sequence in which he won six of his next seven starts including the Ascot Vale Stakes, Moonee Valley Stakes, W.S. Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams Handicap and Sandown Guineas. Said Bart Cummings: “All along I have said that he is one of the best, if not the best, three-year-old that Australia has known in the last 50 years”. This magnificent group of victories secured for Taj Rossi the award of Racehorse of the Year for the 1973-74 season. Cummings had great respect for Taj Rossi, who was retired to stud as a four-year-old, siring among others, Taj Eclipse, the winner of the 1983 VRC Oaks and yes, owned by Mr and Mrs Victor Peters. WINTER RACE SERIES

VRC-CRV WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES This series for open class milers takes in heats at Sandown, Swan Hill, Caulfield and here at Flemington, attracting the most in-form gallopers over distances from 1400m-1600m and bringing them together for the $201,885 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final on Flemington Finals Race Day. BANJO PATERSON SERIES This series is for open stayers and is named in honour of revered author and poet Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who had a lifelong love affair with horses. Polo matches, picnic races and riding his own pony were all part of his early life in country NSW. After moving to Sydney and qualifying as a solicitor, he began submitting poetry to The Bulletin under the pseudonym “The Banjo”, the name of a racehorse his father had owned. His various careers included jockey, horse trainer in the Middle East during WWI and racing journal editor, but it’s his wonderful bush ballads and poems – such as The Man From Snowy River – that truly reflect his equine passion. In 1886 he published A Dream of the Melbourne Cup; the first of many racing ballads, including Old Pardon, the Son of Reprieve, The Open Steeplechase, Rio Grande’s Last Race and The Wargilah Handicap. NEXT GENERATION SPRINTER SERIES This series for two-year-olds was introduced to showcase young up-and-coming sprinters and provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience up the unique Flemington straight. The intention is to contribute to the development of the next generation of Australia’s world-class sprinting talents. The series takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield, Swan Hill and Sandown, and the $152,085 final is held over the famous Flemington Straight Six course. LEILANI SERIES This series for fillies and mares is named in honour of Leilani, another Bart Cummingstrained champion who left an indelible print on Australian racing. She won the 1974 AJC Oaks before transforming into a dominant four-year-old race mare, winning the Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 1974, before running a gallant second to stablemate Think Big in the Melbourne Cup. In the ensuing autumn, Leilani won the Orr Stakes, St George Stakes and Australian Cup, among other races. Winning 14 of her 28 starts, Leilani was a horse that Cummings was very fond of; so much so that he named his Sydney stables Leilani Lodge in her honour. Although Cummings was not one to talk much about his horses – especially those in the past as he preferred to look forward – it is wellknown that he had huge respect for Leilani, known as a great horse with great fight. Leilani was raced by prominent Melburnians, The Hon Andrew and Mrs Susan Peacock as well as Mr Ian and Mrs Liz Rice. *The Leilani Series, and the former three-year-old fillies series, the Rivette Series, were combined in 2023. WINTER RACE SERIES

SILVER BOWL SERIES This series is for three-year-old milers with heats over distances of 1400m to 1600m held across Melbourne at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown. The final is a $151,885 quality handicap for three-year-olds over 1600m on Flemington Finals Race Day. THE MAHOGANY CHALLENGE Introduced in 2019, the Mahogany Challenge was created to showcase developing stayers in Victoria. The series is for three-year-olds and takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown, before culminating in the final on Flemington Finals Race Day. The series is named after the mighty Mahogany, who was raced jointly by Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams and businessman Kerry Packer, and trained by the all-conquering Lee Freedman. He won eight Group 1 races, including both the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby as a three-year-old, and was named the Australian Racehorse of the Year for the 1993-94 season. Known as one of the most versatile gallopers in Australian racing history, Mahogany won four of his eight Group 1s at Flemington, including the Lightning Stakes in 1995 and 1997.
