ANZAC reflections at Flemington By Andrew Lemon ANZAC
As we commemorate 110 years since Gallipoli and 80 years since the end of the Second World War, we reflect on how the legacy of service is remembered through generations of racegoers, horses and history at Flemington. Can it really be a decade since we gathered around the mounting yard at Flemington on Anzac Day to mark the centenary of the 25 April 1915 landing at Gallipoli? The feature race on Anzac Day 2015 was the VRC St Leger, won by the Victorian-bred colt, Authoritarian. Prince Of Penzance was spelling in a paddock that autumn, ahead of his history-making triumph with Michelle Payne in that year’s Melbourne Cup. Ten years ago. The decades turn, the milestones marked by different generations of champions. One hundred and ten years ago the war was in its earliest months, and most people vainly thought it would be over by Christmas. There was not a 25 April race meeting here in 1915 (Anzac Day races did not begin until the 1960s). In that year, the most recent great event at Flemington had been the 1915 autumn carnival, which ran for four days in early March. An imported American horse, Lempriere, trained by Lou Robertson, won the Australian Cup. The Newmarket Handicap went to Dr A.E. Syme’s Blague (French for ‘Joke’), a top horse who had an Adelaide and a Caulfield Guineas to his name, and later a Goodwood Handicap. The three-mile Champion Stakes, which took some 5½ minutes to run, was won by a genuine New Zealand champion mare, Carlita. She was one of those rare fillies to win the double of the Victoria Derby and the VRC Oaks. Later in 1915 she finished a bold third to Patrobas in the Melbourne Cup, and won the C.B. Fisher Plate five days later. The only real acknowledgement at that autumn meeting that Australia was at war was the VRC donation of £1000 to the Belgian Relief Fund. When news of the heavy toll of death and injury of Australian soldiers first arrived from Anzac Cove at the end of April, the atmosphere changed throughout the nation. 10 By the end of the war the Club had channelled tens of thousands of pounds into patriotic funds. That war dragged on, in Europe and the Middle East, until late 1918. It became the Great War, later the First World War, and it left the world changed forever. Australian deaths alone exceeded 60,000 servicemen and nurses, all of them volunteers. It was to honour them, and those who also served, that Anzac Day as a sombre national holiday was initiated. It is 110 years since Gallipoli. This year marks also the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, where our soldiers again fought in Europe and the Middle East, and in Africa, and in bitter battles in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, where our sailors and aviators were in heroic action, with terrible losses, where thousands of service personnel became prisoners of war, enduring horrific conditions, and where our own shores came under attack. During that world war, it became a more urgent question as to whether the sport of racing should continue. It was in fact dramatically curtailed for much of the war, which stretched from September 1939 to August 1945. Many country and city meetings ceased, as did racing in South Australia for a time. Caulfield became a military training camp and its race meetings through to Patrobas’ 1915 Melbourne Cup pictured with Light Fingers’ 1965 Melbourne Cup.

(Image: State Library of Victoria) 1944 were held at Flemington instead. Williamstown, a major city track, was also requisitioned by the military and never reopened. The autumn carnival 80 years ago was a season for longshots. In the Newmarket, Three Wheeler at 33/1 (ridden by Bill Williamson) beat Wonder Bird at 100/1. And the grey mare Spectre, hitherto a maiden, put in a form reversal to win the Australian Cup at odds of 33/1 – ridden by the 17-year-old apprentice and future champion, Ron Hutchinson. Twenty years later, who were the hero horses of 1965? The classy mare Ripa won the Newmarket, Craftsman the Australian Cup. In the spring, Light Fingers won the Melbourne Cup, a first victory in the race for Bart Cummings and Roy Higgins. It was in that year, 1965, sixty years ago, that the Menzies Government first committed an infantry battalion to serve in Vietnam, arguing that a communist victory there would be a direct military threat to Australia. The rights and wrongs of that commitment have been debated ever since, and the Whitlam Government on taking office in 1972 withdrew Australian forces. By that time the official Australian military death toll in Vietnam was 521, with some 2400 wounded. All of these service personnel, their families and descendants, are the ones we mourn and honour at the Anzac Day races today, along with those who have served Australia and suffered in other conflicts. Lest We Forget, the phrase runs, but there is no forgetting while the world continues, in one theatre or another, to be endlessly at war. Peace in our time? Maybe next year.
IN THE FLEMINGTON’S QUIET CONTRIBUTION TO WWI Shelter stand By Andrew Lemon
In July 1915, with camps overcrowded and morale high, Flemington Racecourse opened its doors to the AIF, welcoming soldiers into its grandstand at night, while racing continued by day. The Maribyrnong Stand, they called it. It has long gone, but when built in 1886 it was spacious, ‘erected in the most substantial way, the indestructible red gum entering largely into its composition’. In other words, it was in timber, with seating for 2,500 racegoers. It became redundant by 1924 when a two-tier concrete stand was built in front of it for VRC members, and this in turn has given way to the present-day Club Stand. Why was it ‘The Maribyrnong Stand’? This new grandstand offered a superior view of races down the Straight Six and, of these, the Maribyrnong Plate was one of the biggest. The historic Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate is still run during the Melbourne Cup Carnival as a 1000-metre sprint for two-yearolds. In the 1880s, the Plate was as eagerly anticipated as today’s autumn Blue Diamond or Golden Slipper. It was a huge betting race. Leading stables put their new crop to the test. The Maribyrnong Stand found itself put to a completely unexpected use in 1915, early in the First World War. Sheltered from rain, unless a tempest was blowing from the south, and protected to some extent from wind, it was an open-air stand. In that cold winter, the Maribyrnong Stand became sleeping quarters with rugs and palliasses for hundreds of young army recruits who had just enlisted to serve with the Australian Infantry Force overseas. The war had begun a year earlier, and with it came a first wave of volunteers. They needed to be accommodated at training camps not too far from the city centre. A farm at Broadmeadows was hastily selected, and served its ABOVE: Recruits assemble at ‘Flemington Camp’ in September 1915. 14 purpose through the spring and following summer. The first contingents proceeded overseas. Then, towards the end of April 1915, rain set in. The place became a quagmire. Flu and measles raged, even meningitis. ‘The climate of Broadmeadows has small mercy on weaklings’, said one newspaper. Most of the remaining trainees were relocated to Puckapunyal. April 1915 also represented the start of the Gallipoli campaign, the birthplace of the ANZAC legend. Reports of multiple Australian deaths and casualties galvanised a further recruiting campaign and a new wave of enlistments. But where were the new recruits to be accommodated? The wide open spaces of a city racecourse had an immediate appeal, but tents were in short supply. The solution was the agricultural pavilions at the Royal Agricultural Society Showgrounds on the other side of the railway to the racecourse. They called it ‘the Flemington Camp’. By July, 4000 men were accommodated there. The committee of the VRC watched with mixed feelings. As a group, nobody was more patriotic, and already the Club had decreed that profits from wartime meetings should go to war funds. But they were adamant that racing, even if reduced, must continue at Flemington. It was partly a case of morale, partly ensuring that the industry of breeding thoroughbreds should continue. And horses, of all breeds, had a huge part to play in warfare in that era. Thousands of Australian war horses were sent to overseas theatres of war, never to return. Still the AIF recruits kept coming, and the Showgrounds pavilions reached capacity. At first there were thoughts that the racecourse infield could be used for tent accommodation, but the real attraction here was for drill, marching and military exercises. At the end of July, the VRC agreed to make the Maribyrnong Stand available as temporary sleeping accommodation. Illustration of the Flemington racecourse including the Maribyrnong Stand (far right). (Image source: Australian War Memorial) Henry Byron Moore, the pragmatic long-serving Secretary of the VRC, explained arrangements to the evening Herald newspaper: two thousand soldiers would sleep in the Maribyrnong Stand bench seating and in the horse boxes. ‘The men will only sleep at Flemington,’ he explained. ‘They will go across from the Show Ground after each evening meal, and return there before breakfast on the following morning. There will be no cooking or anything like that on the course, and training and racing will not be inconvenienced’. It proved to be a temporary arrangement. The press refrained from reporting on what the recruits thought of their quarters. By the end of August a new camp was up and running at nearby Royal Park, while Broadmeadows was being put back in order. By the spring racing carnival, when Patrobas won the Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup, the Maribyrnong Stand was back to its customary use. Perhaps some names of soldiers or their sweethearts remained, scratched into the timber seating. Some of those names would have a more permanent record in the Australian War Memorial, among those who died for their country. When the Members’ Stand was built in 1924, the Maribyrnong Stand was cut into in sections, removed in lorries and rebuilt at Werribee Racecourse. Here it did duty for another half century, silent witness to one poignant moment in the history of Flemington.
legacy Carrying on the By Celia Purdey This Anzac Day, Flemington Racecourse will once again host the 4th/8th Light Horse Regiment’s Mounted Troop in a powerful display of tradition, respect, and remembrance. Among the riders is George Coleman, a long-serving volunteer, who shares the profound meaning of honouring the fallen from the saddle. A former shearer, stockman, and truck driver, George Coleman, 35, discovered the Light Horse through a deep connection to history. His passion was ignited by stories from a Kokoda veteran family friend, and further solidified while droving cattle with a former 4th Light Horse militiaman who still wore his original gear.
Since 2014, Coleman, who is currently a fourth-year diesel mechanic apprentice, has proudly represented the Light Horse at major commemorative events across Victoria. These include the Shrine of Remembrance, Puckapunyal Army Base, and the Jericho Cup at Warrnambool, where the troop performs a ceremonial charge across the track in tribute to the famed desert campaigns of the Great War. “We get near a full gallop,” he says. “You can just imagine what it must’ve felt like in battle.” At the MCG’s Anzac Eve service, Coleman carries the torch on horseback into the stadium – a deeply moving moment. “It’s an indescribable feeling,” he says. “You can feel the respect from the crowd.” The troop arrives early to allow the horses to settle, often letting them mill around outside the MCG to take in the atmosphere. “The crowd loves them, and the kids always ask the best questions.” Coleman’s wife, Lisa, is a lifelong equestrian involved in showing, dressage, and jumping. Together, they care for six horses, two of which Coleman rides in his role with the Light Horse. The horses are carefully chosen for their temperament. Belle, a reliable quarter horse, is ideal for ceremonial duties, while Ace, a large, calm-headed Standardbred, is better suited for the longer marches. To prepare them for noise and movement, Coleman trains the horses along truck-heavy highways near his home outside Warrnambool. “At Flemington, they’re usually fine – the smells are familiar. But we’ve had a few ex-racehorses that think it’s time to bolt!” Authenticity is vital to the troop’s presence. Their uniforms, bridles, and saddles are either replicas or original pieces, much of which is personally funded by the riders themselves. “We don’t carry the full 80 or 90 kilograms of wartime gear, but even just wearing the woollen undershirt, heavy jacket, and leather leggings, you can appreciate some of what they went through,” Coleman says. For Coleman and his fellow riders, maintaining this legacy is a passionate commitment. “Many of us are driven by a love of history, horses, or both,” he says. “It’s a small sacrifice to honour those who came before us.” This commitment is entirely voluntary – each rider donates their time, covers transport costs, and cares for their own horses. Events like the recent sixweek Chauvel Ride (an event that honours all who served under General Sir Harry Chauvel, leader of the famous 1917 Charge of Beersheba), where riders cover 750 kilometres through regional Victoria, rely on the generosity of local communities for accommodation. The troop continues to welcome new members, and contrary to what many people think, you don’t need to have served. “There’s a misconception that we are all part of the army. Some people have been, but lots haven’t. We just have a strong interest in history,” says Coleman. Through their presence at public commemorations and community events, the troop plays a vital role in keeping the stories of the Light Horse alive – honouring the past while inspiring a deeper understanding of our shared history for generations to come.
