Red Anchor was a New Zealand-bred horse who was awarded the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1985. Trained by legendary trainer T J Smith, Red Anchor won three Group 1 races in the Spring of 1984, highlighted by the 1984 W.S. Cox Plate. Only a three-year-old, Red Anchor was once described by T J Smith as the “new Tulloch,” but unfortunately, he got injured the following year and never raced again. Just how good Red Anchor was, we will never know – but today we recognize and celebrate his outstanding career with the running of the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes. Run for three-year-olds over 1200 metres, the Red Anchor Stakes has been run since 1985, and continues to be one of the many highlights on Cox Plate Day each year. RED ANCHOR STAKES
