16 Graham Salisbury was involved in the racing industry as a (jumps) jockey, racehorse trainer and clerk of the course, but it is with the former Melbourne Cup winner Subzero that he will forever be remembered. After retiring “Subbie’ as his clerk’s pony, he dedicated himself to making him“the people’s horse” and that association will forever remain his lasting legacy. From visiting countless schools and retirement homes, hospitals and hotels, Graham and Subbie enriched the lives of so many with their warmth, humour and generosity. Graham was as comfortable with sheiks and supermodels as he was with Prime Ministers and people from all walks of life. And always there was Subbie by his side, Graham selflessly gave so much of his time to share their unique bond. Graham never sought the spotlight, he deflected always to Subbie but there could never have been one without the other.“He was like a son to me,” Graham would say. “There will be a lot of other horses who will do things like him,” Graham would say of Subbie,“but they’ll never do it as good as him, there will never be another Subbie.” There will never be another Graham Salisbury. Graham was 76 when he passed away last Saturday. He is survived by his wife Anita, son Anthony, his daughter Nicole and of course Subbie. VALE GRAHAM SALISBURY
