In 1947 he became the ABC’s Melbourne Commentator, calling his first full racemeeting and his first Melbourne Cup in 1948. Joe was also the Course Broadcaster at the Melbourne Metropolitan tracks up until 1974 and called his last race for the ABC at Moonee Valley in June, 1981. He was awarded an M.B.E. in 1981 for his services to horse racing and broadcasting and had called 33 consecutive Melbourne Cups, which was a record at the time.
