2 This P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day will be the first without the great man himself. Peter Lawrence was an absolute legend of the Melbourne Racing Club, serving on our committee for 31 years, of which 11 of these he served as Chairman. He was such an influential man, a real man about town in the best sense, and an all-round gentleman. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the enormous contribution Peter made to the Club. With Saturday’s P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day and race named in his honour, let’s take a moment to reflect on Peter’s legacy and appreciate the work that he did for all of us. I think that he would be incredibly excited about the field that has lined up for his namesake this year. Our thoughts are with Mary Rowe, his daughter Clare and son-in-law Ninian Lewis and grandchildren Rory, Francesca and Charlie this weekend. We are also proud to continue to support Melbourne Legacy on P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day. Legacy has been supporting veterans’ families for over 96 years by providing services including advocacy, educational grants, youth programs and financial assistance, to these families as they navigate the grief that can follow loss and the transition out of service. All proceeds from Super Boxes purchased for Saturday’s raceday will be donated directly to Legacy. I implore our Members to get behind this great cause. Simply order a Super Box to have it delivered on raceday morning and know you’re playing an important role in helping this wonderful organisation keep their legacy promise to families.
