As an engineer, Monash’s early career was in bridge construction before later changing to building construction. Commissioned in 1887, Monash had risen to the rank of Colonel by 1913 and served in Gallipoli as Commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade (AIF). In 1916 he was promoted to Major General and commanded the 3rd Division, AIF in France. Monash became Commander of the Australian Corps in 1918 and was knighted in recognition of his role in the battle of Hamel Hill. Monash was known as a brilliant tactician and meticulous planner. After the war, Monash resumed a civilian career as firstly General Manager and later Chairman of the State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria. Monash University, established in 1961, was named in his honour.
