Waller chasing his first
Sydney’s leading trainer
Chris Waller
is
chasing his first win in the Queen Of The Turf
Stakes—he has a strong hand with the two
shortest-priced mares in pre-post markets—
Catkins
and
Red Tracer
.
Waller has trained 33 Group 1 winners,
including eight this season on top of his nine in
2012-13.
One of his Group 1 winners this season is
Red
Tracer
, who took out the Myer Classic (1600m)
at Flemington in the spring. Red Tracer is
aiming to repeat what Appearance did last
year—win the Myer and Queen Of The Turf in
the same season.
Inghams for five
Catkins
’ jockey
Hugh Bowman
will wear the
all cerise of the Ingham family, headed by Bob
Ingham and, until his death in 2003, brother
Jack. The Inghams have won the Queen Of The
Turf four times—Forensics (2008), Mnemosyne
(2006), Hosannah (2003) and Shame (1996).
Waterhouse for six
Gai Waterhouse
has trained a record five
winners of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes, the
most recent the wonderful More Joyous in 2012
and 2011—the only multiple winner.
Waterhouse doesn’t have a headline mare
this year, but her mare
Diamond Drille
ran a nice fourth behind Catkins in the
Emancipation Stakes.
Rawiller for three
Nash Rawiller
rode More Joyous in her two
wins in the Queen Of The Turf and he sits one
behind Chris Munce as the leading jockey.
Rawiller will ride dual Group 1 winner
Red Tracer
.
Backing up
Two past winners—Camino Rose (1999) and Just
Topic (1975)—were placed the previous year.
Camino Rose finished third behind Arletty and
Just Topic was third behind Favoured.
Last year’s placegetters in the Queen Of The
Turf were
Red Tracer
and
Streama
.
