34 Jim McKinnon had a lifetime interest in racing especially in the local district. He first joined the Garvoc Racing Club committee in 1944 and became vice-President in the early sixties. He continued in this capacity until the Garvoc Club merged to form T&DRC in 1982. Likewise, he was involved with the Hampden Racing Club committee after WW2. He became President and continued in that role until the merger into T&DRC. He continued to serve on the T&DRC and was made a life member in 1992. He also served as a Club Steward for each Of Garvoc and Hampden clubs. In 1971 he became delegate to the South Western District Racing Association representing Garvoc Racing Club, Hampden Racing Club and Cobden Turf Club. He continued to serve in this capacity for TDRC. He was an avid punter with a broad knowledge of horses. He attended many local race meetings and of particular interest was an annual excursion to Flemington for the Grand National Hurdle and Steeple races in July accompanied by other racing enthusiasts. He passed away in 2002 and the family combine to acknowledge his contribution to the Racing Industry, especially when the local industry had to work hard to survive and in fact thrive.
