Terang

26 Patrick Scally was born in 1839 in County Westmeath Ireland. As a nineteen year old he migrated to Australia arriving at Port Phillip in 1858.; Settling in Noorat, Patrick began purchasing land and built a residence on his block which is called Westmeath. Patrick was a keen horseman and joined the Terang Racing Club at its inception. In 1888 he became a trustee remaining in the role until 1911. Patrick was always in demand as a jockey and in later years acted as a club steward. Upon Patrick’s retirement from the committee in 1911 the resulting vacancy was filled by his eldest son John. John was to marry Annie Carr the daughter of one of Terang’s first doctors Dr. Michael Carr. Dr. Carr was from County Kerry and was also a keen horseman. John and Annie would make Westmeath their home. John continued the role of trustee and committeeman for the next 30 years. He served as Vice President as well as acting as starter and club steward. In 1943 he was joined on the committee by his brother Patrick Jnr. who filled the role of trustee for 19 years and acted as Treasurer. Patrick Jnr. who farmed next to Westmeath, trained racehorses at Westmeath for many years. John’s son, John F. Scally (Frank) who lived at Westmeath all his life, joined the Terang Racing Club Committee in 1952. Prior to this he was a prominent amateur jockey winning the South Western District Racing Association (S.W.D.R.A.) premiership three times. He won the Terang Cup in 1945 on Gun Talk. He later trained horses at Westmeath. While on the committee he acted as trustee until his retirement. For 23 years Frank was the official starter for the S.W.D.R.A. He was made a life member of the Terang Racing Club in 1985. westmeath handicap
