Between the wars he was Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police. In the Second World War he was successively Commander of the 6th Australian Division, 1st Australian Corps, AIF Middle East; Deputy Commander-in-Chief Middle East; Commander-in- Chief Australian Military Forces and Commander Allied Land Forces South-West Pacific Area. Knighted in 1935, Sir Thomas Blamey was a member of the Victoria Racing Club Committee from 1947 until his death. He was promoted Field Marshal in 1950, the only Australian to have reached this rank.
