The rival Victoria Jockey Club took over the race in 1858. It honoured Britain’s St Leger, the world’s oldest 3YO classic (2921m). The local clubs re-formed into the VRC in 1864. Thirteen VRC St Leger winners including Phar Lap have gone on to win the Melbourne Cup. The race was first run on ANZAC Day in 1972.
